Happy 73rd birthday to San Diego native Morehead, threw ’65 no-no

The San Diego Padres still await the club’s first no-hitter, but a man born in San Diego 73 years ago today threw one in 1965.

Boston Red Sox hurler Dave Morehead no-hit the Cleveland Indians on Thursday, September 16, 1965 for a 2-0 victory at Fenway Park.

Morehead played for San Diego’s Herbert Hoover High School before enrolling at San Diego State University and signing with the Red Sox in 1961.

According to Andrew Blume’s great SABR bio, Morehead grew up attending games of the PCL Padres and listening to the AAA team on radio.

Morehead posted a 40-64 record over an eight-year career with the Red Sox and the Kansas City Royals.
