7,385: Watching a blown save via the Wrigley out-of-town scoreboard

Friday, June 13th, 2008

Well, so much for a little momentum building leading up to my Friday night trek to Shea.

After starting the season with nine innings of perfection, Mets closer Billy Wagner blew another save attempt Thursday to waste a stellar performance by Johan Santana, who struck out 10 batters in seven innings while giving up no earned runs and just three hits and three walks.

I was following the Mets’ 5-4 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks Thursday via Wrigley Field’s out-of-town scoreboard, which looked perfect for the Mets up until reliever Joe Smith gave up a two-run-scoring triple in the eighth, followed by Wagner’s breakdown in the ninth.

Once I saw “13″ under “RP” (relief pitcher), I assumed the game was in hand. You know what they say about assume.

Santana took his no hitter into the third inning, when Chris Young hit a two-out single to center to bump our NoNoHitters.com count up to 7,385 games without a no hitter.

7,364: Beltran’s 13th-inning blast boosts Mets

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

Carlos Beltran hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the 13th inning Tuesday night to lead the New York Mets to a well-needed 5-3 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Starter Mike Pelfrey pitched well enough to earn a win (8 innings, 5 hits, 1 earned run) but Billy Wagner blew his save opportunity in the ninth. Instead, Claudio Vargas, whose been settling well into a long relief role since Pedro Martinez’s return, got the W.

Our No hitters killed by first at bat page earned another update tonight, as Pelfrey gave up a leadoff single to Chris Young singled to center. That put the NoNoHitters.com count to 7,384 New York Mets games without a no hitter.

7,383: Mets squander 5-1 lead to lose fifth straight

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

The New York Mets built a 5-1 lead Tuesday night, only to squander it for the team’s fifth straight loss - a 9-5 debacle to the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Mets these days simply seem to be finding different ways to lose, and the squad is now three games below .500.

The chance of a no hitter went away in the first when Stephen Drew singled to center off of John Maine. That advanced the NoNoHitters.com count to 7,383 New York Mets games without a no hitter.

Ojeda single off Santana makes 7,349 games without a no hitter

Sunday, May 4th, 2008

Augie Ojeda singled to center off Johan Santana Sunday to drive the NoNoHitters.com count to 7,349 New York Mets games without a no hitter.

Santana had another strong showing, giving up just one earned run while scattering six hits and four walks over six innings. He struck out seven but left without a decision.

The Mets won 5-2, thanks to an errant throw on a Carlos Delgado routine grounder in the ninth that should have been a double play. Instead, the Mets broke the tie and would add two more runs.

Billy Wagner pitched another perfect ninth for his seventh save of the season.

Another leadoff single by Young puts count at 7,348, Mets lose 10-4

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

The Arizona Diamondbacks’ Chris Young got a leadoff single for the second straight game Saturday afternoon to bump the NoNoHitters.com count to 7,348 New York Mets games without a no hitter.

This one was given up by Mike Pelfrey, and it marks the 885th potential no hitter broken up by a leadoff hit. We’ve updated our No hitters killed by first at bat page to show the 668 games killed by a single and the 472 games killed by an opening hit on the road.

The Diamondbacks beat the Mets 10-4, and Pelfrey took his second loss of the season. He gave up nine hits, five earned runs and four walks over five innings.

The other five runs came from Duaner Sanchez, who in just 1/3 of an inning gave up four hits and a walk while getting charged with five earned runs. Before his appearance, the Mets trailed by only a run.

The Diamondbacks’ Chris Young lead off the bottom half of the first with a single up the middle off John Maine Friday night to advance the NoNoHitters.com count to 7,347 New York Mets games without a no hitter.
