7,573: Injury list grows as Mets lose 7-1

Sunday, July 19th, 2009
Stop the insanity

Mets starter Fernando Nieve was forced out of the game in the second inning Sunday as injuries continued to plague the team during a 7-1 loss in Atlanta.

Nieve left with a no-hitter still alive – only the 12th time in Mets franchise history that’s happened. We’ve chronicled it and the 11 others in this post.

Two batters into Tim Redding’s relief appearance, Yunel Escobar blasted a homer to kill the no-hitter and give the Braves their first run making it 7,573 games without a no-no. Redding pitched three innings, yielding five runs (two of them earned) on four hits and three walks.

7,572: Santana pitches Mets to victory over Braves

Saturday, July 18th, 2009
Save your brooms, Braves fans

Johan Santana threw seven innings of scoreless ball Saturday to lead the Mets to a 5-1 win over the Atlanta Braves, so at least the series sweep is off the table.

Santana gave up just five hits and two walks while striking out five. He lost his no-hitter in the first inning on a Martin Prado double, advancing our NoNoHitters.com count to 7,572 New York Mets games without a no-no.

The Mets broke the scoreless tie in the sixth when Jeremy Reed drew a bases-loaded walk and David Wright scored on an Omir Santos ground-ball fielder’s choice.

Chipper Jones tagged Pedro Feliciano for a homer in the eighth to cut the Braves’ deficit to one, but the Mets responded with three insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Angel Pagan tripled home Alex Cora, and Luis Castillo sacrificed home Pagan. Jeff Francour tallied an RBI against his former team by singling home Daniel Murphy.

Francisco Rodriguez pitched a perfect ninth to preserve Santana’s 11th win of the season.

7,571: Not a good night for Mets, who lose 11-0

Friday, July 17th, 2009
2009 is fading fast

The Atlanta Braves held the Mets to two hits while racking up 11 runs Friday night as the Mets woes continued with a shutout.

Mets’ starter Mike Pelfrey gave up nine runs on nine hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings of work. He lost his no-hitter in the first inning when Martin Prado doubled, making it 7,571 New York Mets games without a no-hitter.

The only hits Braves’ starter Jair Jurrjens gave up were a second-inning leadoff double by Gary Sheffield and a fourth-inning double by David Wright.

Sheffield later left the game with a hamstring injury.

And more bad news … the Phillies won again, so the Mets are now 8 1/2 games out of first.

7,570: Mets fall to 7 1/2 GB with loss to Braves

Thursday, July 16th, 2009
Mets losing ground

The Braves’ bullpen outperformed the Mets staff and Chipper Jones knocked in the go-ahead run Thursday night for a 5-3 win at Turner Field.

Starter Oliver Perez lost his no-hitter in the second inning when Yunel Escobar blasted a homer to left, making it 7,570 New York Mets games without a no-no. Garret Anderson then stepped to the plate and launched a deep liner to right, just clearing the foul pole for back-to-back homers that gave the Braves a 2-0 lead.

The Mets fought back in the fourth after Luis Castillo reached base on a weakly hit single up the middle that should have been fielded by Martin Prado. David Wright advanced Castillo to third with a single on a hit-and-run play, and Sheffield scored him on what should double-play ball that, too, was mishandled by Prado. Wright scored on a Jeff Francoeur groundout, and Daniel Murphy drove in Sheffield with a double to give the Mets a 3-2 lead.

But those would be all the runs the Mets could muster, and the Braves tied the game in the bottom half of the inning when Brian McCann scored on a Matt Diaz double to left, just sneaking in under Brian Schneider’s tag.

Perez again limited his hits over his six innings of work, yielding just five, but again showed control issues by issuing four walks. He left with the game tied at 3.

Pedro Feliciano walked what would turn out to be the go ahead run in the seventh by walking pinch-hitter Brooks Conrad, and Bobby Parnell let him score with back-to-back singles by Prado and Chipper Jones.

Atlanta added an insurance run in the eighth when pinch-hitter Greg Norton singled home pinch-runner Ryan Church.

The Braves’ bullpen shut down the Mets in the latter innings.

7,515: Prado’s 12th inning homer lifts Braves over Mets

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009
Close, but no cigar

Martin Prado’s homer in the top of the 12th inning off Ken Takahashi Wednesday afternoon erased three Mets’ comebacks and lifted the Atlanta Braves to an 8-7 win over New York.

The loss put a damper on a big day by Fernando Tatis, who went 3-for-5 tagged Braves’ starter Buddy Carlyle for a grand slam in the second inning.

Mets starter Jonathon Niese lasted 4 2/3 innings, giving up five runs on seven hits and two walks. He relinquished the no-hitter in the first inning when Chipper Jones hit an RBI double to center, advancing our NoNoHitters.com count to 7,515 games without a New York Mets no-no.

The Mets head west to begin a four-game series with the San Francisco Giants late Thursday night.

7,514: Beltran draws walk-off walk for Mets win

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009
Walk-off walk win

Carlos Beltran drew a bases-loaded walk-off walk in the bottom of the tenth inning Tuesday night to cap a late-inning comeback and lead the Mets to a 4-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves at Citi Field.

Starter Mike Pelfrey had another strong start, giving up just two runs on six hits and a walk in seven innings of work. He lost his no-hitter in the second inning when Brian McCann singled to left, making it 7,514 New York Mets games without a no-hitter.

New York didn’t get the leadoff runner on base until the eighth inning when Jeremy Reed singled. After Ryan Church reached base with a one-out single, Jose Reyes doubled to left-center to score both Reed and Church, but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple.

Beltran led off the bottom of the ninth with a double down the left field line. After David Wright fouled out, Beltran stole third (It looked like Chipper Jones got the tag down before Beltran’s hand, but … oh well). Mike Gonzalez hit Fernando Tatis with a pitch, and then pinch-hitter Luis Castillo stepped up and hit a shallow fly ball to left to score Beltran. The inning ended when Gonzalez picked Tatis off first, prompting his tag-out at second.

Reyes jump-started the tenth with a two-out single up the middle. With Alex Cora at bat, Reyes stole second, prompting the Braves’ Jeff Bennett to intentionally walk Cora to face Ramon Castro. After a clearly unintentional base-on-balls issued to Castro, Beltran ended the game with his walk.

Mets’ closer Francisco Rodriguez allowed leadoff singles in both the top of the ninth and top of the tenth innings, but worked his way out of both jams for the win. McCann gave fans a scare in the tenth when he blasted a pitch just right of the foul pole by the Pepsi Porch.

7,513: Mets’ collapse hands Santana a loss despite 0 earned runs

Monday, May 11th, 2009
Can’t we get Johan some runs?

The Atlanta Braves scored five unearned runs Monday night to spoil another strong Johan Santana start and beat the New York Mets 8-3 at Citi Field.

The loss halts the Mets’ win streak at 7.

Santana lost his no-hitter on the second batter when Yunel Escobar hit an infield hit to deep short, making it 7,513 New York Mets games without a no-hitter. After Escobar advanced to second on a Martin Prado single, Matt Diaz hit a chopper over third base that David Wright fielded nicely several steps behind the bag.

But Wright threw the ball in the dirt and Fernando Tatis, who was filling in for Carlos Delgado, couldn’t dig it out and Escobar was able to score. It was scored a base hit and a throwing error, so the run was unearned.

The Mets got their run in fifth after back-to-back one-out singles by Fernando Tatis and Jeremy Reed put runners at first and third. Catcher Omir Santos followed with a sacrifice fly to right to make it 1-1.

Santana got out No. 1 in seventh before giving up a Kelly Johnson single that ended his night. Reliever Bobby Parnell got the second out after Escobar singled, and Pedro Felicano got Brian McCann to hit a grounder up the middle to Jose Reyes, but Reyes mishandled it and everyone was safe.

Diaz and Casey Kotchman followed with singles that each drove in two runs and the Braves were up 5-1.

David Wright doubled in the bottom of the seventh and Tatis got him home on a ground-out for the Mets’ second run.
Santos singled home Tatis in the ninth for run No. 3.

Santana pitched 6 1/3 innings, giving up the two runs (both unearned) on seven htis and a walk. He struck out six and actually lowered his ERA to 0.78.

7,507: Can’t we ever just get a routine win?

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009
Can’t it ever be easy?

What should have been a routine save turned into a nailbiting ninth Tuesday night as the New York Mets held on for a 4-3 win over the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field.

Mets starter Livan Hernandez held the Atlanta Braves to just one run in 6 1/3 innings of work, giving up seven hits and two walks while striking out a pair. He lost his no-hitter in the second inning on a Casey Kotchman double, making it 7,507 Mets games without a no-no.

The Mets jumped on the scoreboard in the third on RBI doubles by David Wright and Ramon Castro. The Braves got their first run in the seventh when pinch hitter Martin Prado doubled to left to knock in Jeff Francoeur.

Carlos Delgado singled home Jose Reyes and Daniel Murphy for a couple of insurance runs in the top of the ninth – and those runs turns out to be extremely important as Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez ran into a little trouble after retiring the first two batters in the bottom half of the inning.

After pinch hitter Kelly Johnson singled to right, K-Rod walked Clint Sammons. Rodriguez then got Omar Infante to hit a routine pop-up to first, but Delgado dropped the ball while trying to one-hand it, letting Johnson score. The next pitch, Yunel Escobar lined a single to left center to score Sammons and make it 4-3.

K-Rod finally closed the door on the game when Chipper Jones flied out out to deep right center.

It shouldn’t be this hard to get a “W.”

7,506: Homers from Beltran, Wright and Beltran lift Mets

Monday, May 4th, 2009
Love those 2-run dingers

Carlos Beltran blasted a pair of two-run homers and David Wright also got one as the New York Mets overcame a three-run deficit to top the Atlanta Braves 6-4 at Turner Field Monday night.

Mets starter John Maine got into trouble in the third inning, giving up three runs on a a pair of hits and three walks. But those would be the only three runs he’d give up over a strong six-inning stint that ended with three hits, six walks and seven strikeouts.

He lost his no-hitter in the second inning when Jeff Francoeur led off with a single up the middle, making it 7,506 New York Mets games without a no-no.

Bobby Parnell contributed with a scoreless inning and J.J. Putz got tagged for a solo homer before Francisco Rodriguez came in for a 1-2-3 ninth.

7,478: Mets waste late-inning opportunities, fall into wild-card tie with Brewers

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008
New York Mets game number
7,478 games without a New York Mets no-hitter

Derrek Lee blooped an RBI single and Aramis Ramirez followed with a two-run homer to give the Chicago Cubs a 10th-inning 9-6 win over the New York Mets.

The Mets put runners on third base with no outs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, but could manage just one run out of those opportunities when Ramon Martinez drew an eighth-inning bases loaded walk to tie the game at 6.

The Mets appeared poised for a walk-off victory in the bottom of the ninth after rookie Daniel Murphy led off with a triple. But after Cubs reliever Bob Howry struck out David Wright, he issued an intentional passes to Carlos Delgado and Carlos Beltran and then got Ryan Church to ground into a fielder’s choice that forced Murphy out at home. Howry then struck out Ramon Castro to send the game to extra innings.

The emotional roller coaster ride began in the second inning when Mets starter Oliver Perez gave the Cubs a 1-0 lead on a solo homer by Mark DeRosa.

Cubs starter Carlos Zambrano, just two starts removed from throwing a no-hitter, was wild but nearly unhittable. But the Mets pounced on him for five runs in the third, as three straight walks, an umpire who wouldn’t give up the corners and Jose Reyes creeping down the third baseline proved too much of a distraction. Zambrano threw a 3-2 pitch, and Carlos Delgado blasted it over the left center field wall for a grand slam that gave the Mets a 5-1 lead.

Unfortunately, Perez would give back those runs in the fifth when he yielded a bases-loaded double to DeRosa and reliever Duaner Sanchez let Perez’s other two baserunners score on a single.

The Cubs took a 6-5 lead in the seventh when Alfonso Soriano doubled home Ronny Cedeno, which held until the eighth-inning bases-loaded walk.

Perez lasted just 4 1/3 innings, giving up five earned runs on five hits and five walks while striking out six. His no-hitter disappeared right off the bat. Soriano lead off with a single to left-center that fell just out of the reach of a diving Murphy, extending our NoNoHitters.com count of Mets games without a no-no to 7,478 games.

It also marked the 39th time this season that a potential Mets no-no was broken up on the first at bat. (See our No-hitters killed by first at bat page for more details.)
