McCann single makes 7,344; Wagner’s no-hit streak comes to end

Sunday, April 27th, 2008

Braves catcher Brian McCann singled to right in the second inning Sunday to move the NoNoHitters.com count to 7,344 New York Mets games without a no hitter.

The Mets won 6-3 thanks to a pair of Carlos Delgado homers, but Billy Wagner’s streak of nine consecutive no-hit innings came to an end when the Mets closer gave up a line-drive single to right to Matt Diaz with one out in the ninth. Wagner went on to finish off the next two batters to get his sixth save of the season.

Nelson Figueroa got the start for the Mets and lasted 5 1/3 innings while giving up 3 earned runs, 7 hits and 3 walks while striking out 3.

Billy Wagner completes nine-part no hitter with Mets 4-3 win

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

Mets’ closer Billy Wagner has just completed a no hitter. Unfortunately, he’ll get no credit for the accomplishment in the Major League Baseball record books, as it was pitched during nine separate games.

Wagner pitched a no-hit ninth inning for the Mets Saturday to save the game for John Maine, his ninth hitless inning in a row. Wagner has made nine appearances this season, all during Mets wins, and in each he’s pitched one inning giving up no hits (and no earned runs).

Here’s the rundown:

April 26 against Atlanta, Mets win 4-3, save
April 23 against Washington, Mets win 7-2
April 19 against Philadelphia, Mets win 4-2, save
April 18 against Philadelphia, Mets win 6-4, save
April 17 against Washington, Mets win 3-2
April 16 against Washington, Mets win 5-2, save
April 11 against Milwaukee, Mets win 4-2, save
April 10 against Philadelphia, Mets win 4-3
April 2 against Florida, Mets win 13-0

Congrats Billy! With the NoNoHitters.com count at 7,343 and counting, this might be as close as we get to the real thing for a while.

Billy Wagner pieces together a no-no

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

With Mets’ fan/no hitter streak aficionado Dave Mackey noting yesterday that closer Billy Wagner has now notched 8 one-inning appearances without yielding a hit, Mets Walk-Offs has done some research and quantified some of these Mets mini no-nos.

If you go back to the end of last season - although most of us have vowed never to do that - Wagner actually has had nine straight hitless outings of at least an inning each. Wagner’s last 2007 appearance was during a 7-4 loss to the Marlins.

Check out his full post for more details, but Mets Walk-Offs has found that there have been 3,270 time that a Mets pitcher appeared in a game, threw at least an inning and finished with no hits allowed. Here’s his Top 5:

  • John Franco 238
  • Armando Benitez 160
  • Jesse Orosco 93
  • Turk Wendell 91
  • Aaron Heilman 73

He’s got an incredible number of additional mini no-no tidbits, so check out his full post.

It’s also important that Wagner has actually participated in a full-game no hitter during an Astros 8-0 victory over the New York Yankees on June 11, 2003. Here’s the crew that accomplished that one, with their innings in parentheses: Roy Oswalt (1), Peter Munro (2 2/3), Kirk Saarloos (1 1/3), Brad Lidge (2), Octavio Dotel (1) and Wagner (1)

Unfortunately, none of this changes the count.
