7,573: Injury list grows as Mets lose 7-1

Sunday, July 19th, 2009
Stop the insanity

Mets starter Fernando Nieve was forced out of the game in the second inning Sunday as injuries continued to plague the team during a 7-1 loss in Atlanta.

Nieve left with a no-hitter still alive – only the 12th time in Mets franchise history that’s happened. We’ve chronicled it and the 11 others in this post.

Two batters into Tim Redding’s relief appearance, Yunel Escobar blasted a homer to kill the no-hitter and give the Braves their first run making it 7,573 games without a no-no. Redding pitched three innings, yielding five runs (two of them earned) on four hits and three walks.

7,567: Mets held to four hits in 3-0 loss to Reds

Hard to win without runs

Fernando Nieve limited the Cincinnati Reds to three runs but the Mets couldn’t score one Friday night during a 3-0 loss at Citi Field.

Nieve lost his no-hitter in the second inning on a Jerry Hairston Jr. single, advancing our NoNoHitters.com count to 7,567 New York Mets games without a no-no.

Daniel Murphy was the only Mets’ batter in the first through seventh spots who could manage a hit, going 2-for-4 on the night. A bunt single by Argenis Reyes and a bloop single by Nieve were the only others.

The Reds scored their runs on a pair of solo homers and a messed up suicide squeeze that was credited as a stealing of home by Brandon Phillips.

One player who will no longer be burdened with the Mets’ no no-hitters streak is Ryan Church, who was traded to the Atlanta Braves before the game for outfielder Jeff Francoeur.

7,562: Another Mets-Phillies game, another loss

Beat by the Phils again

Jamie Moyer held the Mets hitless until the fourth as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Mets 4-1 at Citizens Bank Park.

Starter Fernando Nieve scored the Mets only run with a fifth-inning single to left that scored Nick Evans. He lost his no-hitter in the first inning on a Shane Victorino single, making it 7,562 New York Mets games without a no-no.

It looks like Nieve will keep his spot in the rotation as Tim Redding is being sent to the bullpen to make room for Oliver Perez.

7,557: Slam off Stokes kills Mets’ recovery

Monday, June 29th, 2009
New ways to lose

The Mets recovered from starter Fernando Nieve’s early shellacking, but the bullpen wasted the effort Monday night during a 10-6 loss in Milwaukee.

Nieve got rocked for 11 hits in 3 1/3 innings, but he amazingly escaped with allowing just three earned runs. Reliever Elmer Dessens came in with the bases loaded in the fourth inning and got Ryan Braun to fly out to right, and Ryan Church threw a strike to Brian Schneider to nail Brad Looper at the plate for the double play.

Nieve, by the way, lost his no-hitter in the first inning when J.J. Hardy doubled to left, making it 7,557 New York Mets games without a no-no.

Dessens provided another strong inning of relief, allowing the Mets to climb back within one in the top of the sixth inning when Brian Schneider doubled home Church and Fernando Martinez.

Unfortunately, Casey McGehee tagged Brian Stokes for a grand slam in the bottom half of the sixth inning to seal the Mets fate. Pat Misch gave up a run in the seventh and Bobby Parnell gave up two in the eighth.

Church was 4-for-5 on the night with a run scored and Gary Sheffield went 3-for-5 with three RBIs – great performances, but the Mets have lost four straight.

7,552: Another win for Nieve, Mets top cards 11-0

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009
Nieve’s an ace!

Fernando Nieve improved to 3-0 as a Mets starter Wednesday night as New York crushed the St. Louis Cardinals 11-0 at Citi Field.

Nieve threw six scoreless innings, scattering three hits and four walks while reaching 108 pitches. He lost his no-hitter with one out in the third inning when Brendan Ryan hit a slow roller to third that David Wright didn’t charge, letting Ryan beat out the throw for an infield hit. It advanced our NoNoHitters.com count to 7,552 New York Mets games without a no-no.

Nieve got himself into a two-out bases-loaded jam in the inning, but struck out Rick Ankiel with a 3-2 94 mile-per-hour fastball to end the inning.

Wright had a great night at the plate by going 4-for-4 with three runs scored, and Nick Evans in his first 2009 start went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer to deep left in the fourth. Ryan Church was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, and Fernando Tatis was 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs.

The bullpen did its job, with Brian Stokes, newcomer Pat Misch and Bobby Parnell each pitching a scoreless inning.

7,547: Mets top Rays, another great start for Nieve

Mets top Rays

Fernando Nieve provided a strong start and Brian Schneider hit a three-run homer Friday night to lead the Mets to a 5-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Nieve lost his no-hitter in the third inning when Dioner Navarro singled to left, making it 7,547 New York Mets games without a no-no.

Daniel Murphy went 3-for-4 on the night, and Ryan Church was 2-for-3.

K-Rod got his 18th save, a day after blowing his second of the season, although we all know we can’t fault him for No. 1.

7,542: Nieve helps Mets even up Subway Series

Saturday, June 13th, 2009

AAA call-up Fernando Nieve helped the New York Mets recover from Friday night’s devastating loss Saturday as the Mets topped the Yankees 6-3 to even up the 2009 Subway Series.

Nieve, getting the start for the injured John Maine, threw for 6 2/3 innings, giving up just two earned runs on 4 hits and two walks. In contrast, the Mets jumped on starter Andy Pettite for five earned runs on 12 hits in just five innings of work.

Omir Santos got the Mets on the scoreboard with a second-inning two-run homer to left, just before Nieve lost his no-hitter in when Alex Rodriguez led off the bottom of the second with a homer, advancing our NoNoHitters.com count to 7,542 games.

The Mets rallied for three runs in the fifth on a Gary Sheffield RBI single, a Fernando Tatis RBI fielder’s choice and a Santos RBI double. Sheffield added another run in the seventh with a solo homer.

The Yankees got one back in the bottom of the seventh on a Derek Jeter RBI single.
