7,531: Mets win on stellar start by Maine, despite virus

Sunday, May 31st, 2009
Nice job, Maine

John Maine threw six shutout innings while battling the onset of a stomach virus and the bullpen just held back an eighth-inning rally from spilling over Sunday as the New York Mets topped the Florida Marlins 3-2 at Citi Field.

Maine threw six stellar innings, yielding just three hits and two walks while striking out five. He lost his no-hitter in the second when Dan Uggla doubled off the top of the wall in left-center, a shot that would have been a homer in just about any other ballpark. The double made it 7,531 New York Mets games without a no-hitter, but didn’t result in a run.

Center-fielder Angel Pagan, filling in for Carlos Beltran who was sidelined with a stomach virus, got the Mets on the scoreboard in the third by doubling home Wilson Valdez. Pagan wound up leaving the game in the fourth, injuring himself while chasing a deep Hanley Ramirez double.

David Wright helped get Maine out of a jam with a diving catch on a Jorge Cantu liner with runners at the corners in the fifth, popping up to double-up Ramirez at first to end the inning.

Maine took his at-bat in the bottom of the sixth but didn’t pitch the seventh.

The Mets got a couple of insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh with a rally started once again by Gary Sheffield. Sheffield led off with a single, Daniel Murphy sacrificed him into scoring position and Fernando Martinez and Omir Santos followed with back-to-back doubles to make it 3-0.

Eighth-inning man J.J Putz got his first out but walked pinch-hitter Ross Gload hit before giving up back-to-back singles by Chris Coghlan and Emilio Bonifacio to put the Marlins on the board. Ramirez followed with a single off Bobby Parnell to make it 3-2, but Parnell was able to get a strikeout and long fly ball to end the inning.

K-Rod struck out the side (with walk sprinkled in between) for the save.

7,530: Redding tagged for seven runs in Mets loss

Saturday, May 30th, 2009
Thank you blackout

The Florida Marlins jumped on Mets starter Tim Redding early and often Saturday during a 7-3 win at Citi Field.

It was a rare instance in which the Fox Saturday afternoon Extra Innings blackout proved to be a blessing, not a curse.

Redding allowed seven earned runs on eight hits and two walks, giving up fifth-inning hits to Hanley Ramirez and Jorge Cantu before Jeremy Hermida belted three-run homer to end Redding’s horrid outing.

The former National lost his no-hitter in the first inning on a Emilio Bonifacio double, advancing our NoNoHitters.com count to 7,530 New York Mets games without a no-no.

One bright spot was Fernando Martinez, who had his best game as a Met since being called up by going 2-for-5 with an RBI.

7,529: Santos secures spot with homer, walk-off single

Santos stays

Omir Santos made a successful case to stay on the Mets’ roster Friday night, clinching a 2-1 victory with an 11th inning walk-off single after earlier tying the game with a homer.

With Brian Schneider scheduled to come off the disabled list tomorrow, the Mets rewarded Santos by making him the team’s No. 2 catcher. New York traded Ramon Castro to the Chicago White Sox for right-handed pitcher Lance Broadway, who will have to wait to see his name in lights as he was assigned to Class-AAA Buffalo.

Mets’ starter Mike Pelfrey was stellar, giving 7 2/3 innings while yielding just one earned run on five hits. Pelfrey, who struck out six on the night, lost his no-hitter in the third inning when Jeremy Hermida singled to left, advancing our NoNoHitters.com count to 7,529 New York Mets games without a no-no.

The Marlins got their sole run in the fourth after Chris Coghlan drove a ball over Carlos Beltran’s head for a leadoff triple. Left-fielder Gary Sheffield robbed Dan Uggla of a bloop single with a diving catch, but Coghlan was able to score on the sacrifice. Jorge Cantu followed with a double in the right-center gap, but Pelfrey was able to strand him on-base.

The Mets tied the game at 1 when Santos led off the bottom of the fifth by driving an 0-2 fastball into the left field corner for his third home run of the year. Ramon Martinez followed with a single and Pelfrey was able to bunt him into scoring position, but neither Angle Pagan or Luis Castillo could not get him home.

Bonifacio reached base in the eighth with a two-out swinging bunt over just over the head of shortstop Martinez and Pelfrey issued O’Neill his first walk, prompting Mets’ manager Jerry Manuel to go to call on his bullpen. Bobby Parnell was able to get a ground-ball out to end the inning.

David Wright had a chance to give the Mets a lead with the bases loaded and one out in the eighth, but he struck out swinging on a slider and Tatis followed with a fly-out to right.

Francisco Rodriguez pitched a scoreless ninth inning and J.J. Putz held down the fort for 1 1/3 innings, but it was Pedro Feliciano who got a one-batter “W” by retiring Ronny Paulino on a fly-out.

Sheffield got the game-winning rally started in the bottom of the 11th by driving a slider to left for a leadoff single. After Wright struck out and Tatis came, heffield took off for second on a steal attempt and was able to also take third on an errant throw. Marlins reliever Brian Sanches then nailed Tatis in the back with a fastball, bringing up Santos.

Santos lined the first pitch from Sanches over short for the game-winner and was was mobbed in the infield by a cadre of bouncing teammates.

7,503: Putz’ inning wastes Santana gem, Marlins top Mets 4-3

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009
J.J. not dy-no-myte

J.J. Putz gave up an eighth-inning two-RBI single Wednesday as the New York Mets wasted another Johan Santana gem with a 4-3 loss at Citi Field.

Santana gave up two early runs but settled into another strong outing, yielding just five hits and three walks over seven innings while striking out seven. He lost his no-hitter on the game’s second batter when Cameron Maybin tripled to center, making it 7,503 New York Mets games without a no-no. After Wes Helms sacrificed Maybin home, Jorge Cantu blasted a left field roundtripper for his third home run in a 24-hour span.

The Mets struck right back as Jose Reyes led off the bottom of the first with a triple to right and Alex Cora sacrificed him home. Ramon Castro tied the game in the fourth by singling home Fernando Tatis, and the Mets took a 3-2 lead in the sixth when Tatis led off with a homer to left.

Putz began the eighth more like J.J. Walker, issuing bases-on-balls to Cantu and Jeremy Hermida. They they moved up to second and third on a Ronny Paulino sacrifice, and Cody Ross then followed with a single to center to put the Fish up 4-3.

Jeremy Reed, a defense replacement inserted into the nine spot, hit a two-out triple in the bottom of the eighth, but the Mets stranded him at third. The Mets put runners on in the ninth, but David wright, Ryan Church and pinch hitter Omir Santos all failed to drive them in.

The Mets fall to 9-12.

7,502: Green coughs up four runs as Marlins fight back to top Mets

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009
Mets Go Green, lose

Starter Livan Hernandez pitched well, but Sean Green coughed up four runs in the seventh Tuesday night as the Florida Marlins came from behind for a 7-4 win at Citi Field.

The Mets jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Gary Sheffield tripled off the centerfield wall to score Alex Cora and Carlos Beltran. Sheffield is the ninth different Met to triple in nine straight games, and his blast would have been a homer in just about any other ballpark.

Cora singled home Omir Santos in the second inning to put the Mets up 3-0, and Hernandez’s no-no was still in tact until Alfredo Amezaga led off the top of the third with a single up the middle, making it 7,502 New York Mets games without a no-hitter.

The Marlins jumped onto the scoreboard in the fourth when Jorge Cantu blasted a two-run homer to left, but the Mets pushed back in the fifth when David Wright singled home Cora.

The Marlins crept back to a 4-3 deficit in the sixth when Jeremy Hermida chopped a ball down the third base line that bounced off Wright. Reyes grabbed the ball and made a nice throw home, but John Baker slipped under Santos’ tag. The harsh official scorer gave Wright an error on the play.

The Mets needed a strong seventh inning from Sean Green, but they got a single, two walks and a three-run home run by Cantu, his second blast of the night.

In a trend eerily similar to 2008, the Mets bats are cooling off late in games.

7,501: Maine’s one-hit performance, Santos’ slam lifts Mets

Monday, April 27th, 2009
Great start from Maine

John Maine threw six innings of one-hit ball and Omir Santos hit his first career grand slam Monday night as the New York Mets topped the first-place Florida Marlins 7-1 at Citi “Triples” Field.

The Mets’ new ballpark might not be kind to the longball (despite Santos’ slam) but its nooks and crannies provide plenty of places to sneak in three-baggers. Daniel Murphy and David Wright got the team’s seventh and eighth triples of the season, giving the Mets nearly as many triples as homers so far this season.

Maine, who walked three and struck out four, lost his no-hit bid in the first inning when Jorge Cantu singled to center, a hit that resulted in an unearned run. Scoring on the play was Emilio Bonifacio, who reached base when left-fielder Gary Sheffield dropped a routine fly-ball. (Should we start considering putting in Daniel Murphy as a defensive replacement?)

J.J. Putz gave up the Marlins’ second and final hit in the eighth inning.

7,488: Murphy’s error key as Johnson tops Santana in pitchers’ duel

Sunday, April 12th, 2009
Now that’s pitching!

The Mets’ Johan Santana and the Marlins’ Josh Johnson battled it out in an Easter Sunday pitchers’ duel, but an error by outfielder Daniel Murphy proved key as it led to a 2-1 loss in Miami.

Santana struck out 13, but Johnson pitched the Majors’ first complete game of 2009 to give the Marlins a rubber game victory in the three-game series.

Santana actually gave up his first run before his first hit when left-fielder Daniel Murphy misplayed a warning-track fly ball with two out in the second. Murphy initially took a few steps in before backtracking and watching the ball bounce off his glove, giving the Marlins a 1-0 lead on what should have been the third out.

The next batter, Ronny Paulino, lined a single to left to put Florida up 2-0 and advance out NoNoHitters.com count to 7,488 games without a New York Mets no-hitter.

Luis Castillo blooped a broken-bat single into right field in the sixth inning to break up Josh Johnson’s no-hitter.

Carlos Delgado got a two-out rally started in the ninth inning with a deep double and Carlos Beltran knocked him home with a single up the middle, but Ryan Church’s liner to left couldn’t find green. Johnson held the Mets to three hits.

Santana also pitched a gem, giving up two unearned runs on three hits and a walk.

The Mets return to New York for Citi Field’s debut Monday night.

7,487: Hernandez’s strong start, Castillo’s big night lift Mets

Saturday, April 11th, 2009
Livan livens up the Mets

The New York Mets got a strong start from newcomer Livan Hernandez and a 4-for-4 day from Luis Castillo Saturday night to beat the Florida Marlins 8-4.

Jose Reyes went 2-for-5 with 3 RBIs, doubling home Castillo in the third inning and sending him home again in the fifth with a homer. Castillo scored a third time in the eighth on a David Wright single.

Carlos Delgado also had a big night, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

Hernandez lasted 6 2/3 innings, giving up two earned runs on six hits and three walks while striking out four. He lost his no-no in the second inning when the Marlins’ Dan Uggla led off with a single, making it 7,487 New York Mets games without a no-hitter.

I’d write more but I couldn’t actually watch the game on the MLB Extra Innings package thanks to the stupid Fox network exclusivity deal for games airing before 7 p.m. Apparently when the Marlins moved the start time due to the post-game Flo Rida concert, Extra Innings just decided to bag it.

7,486: O’Day come and Bonafacio go home

Friday, April 10th, 2009
Me say day, me say day … O’Day

Jorge Cantu’s walkoff single off Darren O’Day in the bottom of the ninth scored the speedy Emilio Bonifacio to lift the Florida Marlins over the New York Mets 5-4 Friday night.

The Mets got a strong start from John Maine, but he couldn’t get help from his bullpen or offense as the Mets stranded 14 runners on base.

Maine struck out the first two batters he faced before losing his no-hitter in the opening inning when Hanley Ramirez blasted a shot over the center field wall. That gave the Marlins a 1-0 lead and advanced our NoNoHitters.com count to 7,486 New York Mets games without a no-hitter.

Maine gave up just two hits in five innings of work, but both were solo homers. He walked one and struck out five.

Relievers Sean Green and Bobby Parnell were a little more generous with the hits. Each got tagged for a run and three hits in an their single innings of work.

Carlos Beltran got the Mets on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth with a solo homer to left, but the Marlins extended their lead to 3-1 in the bottom half with a Jorge Cantu single. The Mets fought back to tie the game in the seventh on a bases-loaded ground-out by Beltran and a sacrifice fly by Fernando Tatis, but Ramirez singled home the go-ahead run in the bottom half.

After J.J. Putz pitched a strong eighth inning to keep the Mets within one, Jeremy Reed lined a two-out fastball to right in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 4.

Pedro Feliciano pitched well and got two outs in the bottom of the ninth but took the loss by giving up an infield single that put the winning run on base. Sidearmer Darren O’Day gave up a walk and single to end the game and hand the Mets their second straight loss after opening the season 2-0.

7,482: Goodbye Shea, goodbye postseason, goodbye Mets no-no at Shea

Sunday, September 28th, 2008
New York Mets game number
7,482 games without a New York Mets no-hitter

Goodbye Shea, goodbye postseason and goodbye to ever seeing a no-hitter at the Mets’ home since 1964.

In an eighth inning that mirrored many other Mets bullpen giveaways this year, the Marlins’ Wes Helms and Dan Uggla hit back-to-back homers off Scott Schoeneweis and Luis Ayala respectively to end the Mets season in a 4-2 loss. The Milwaukee Brewers clinched the N.L. wild-card spot Sunday with their win over the Chicago Cubs.

It’s only fitting that our patchwork bullpen would end the season.

The NoNoHitters.com count will remain at 7,482 games until next spring when the Mets begin their tenure at Citi Field, as Dan Uggla hit an infield single that went off Oliver Perez’s hand and rolled to second.

Shea, on the other hand, retires having seen just two no-hitters, neither by a Mets’ pitcher.
