7,590: Padres jump on Livan to beat Mets

Thursday, August 6th, 2009
Livan more like Liv-off

The San Diego Padres jumped on Mets starter Livan Hernandez for 7 runs Thursday night en route to a 8-3 win at Petco Park.

Hernandez allowed eight hits and walked four during his five innings of work, losing his no-hitter immediately when Tony Gwynn Jr. lined a leadoff single to right-center field. The hit advanced our NoNoHitters.com count to 7,590 New York Mets games without a no-no.

Gwynn’s hit was followed by a David Eckstein double, a Adrian Gonzalez sac fly and a Kevin Kouzmanoff single to give the Padres and early 2-0 lead. The Padres added four runs in the third and another in fifth before Hernandez was lifted.

Fernando Tatis (2-for-4 with the Mets’ only RBI) killed the Padres’ chance at that their first no-hitter with a second-inning double to left, putting that franchise’s count at 6,465 games, still 1,125 short of the Mets’ mark.

While we’re updating everyone’s counts: Jimmy Rollins’ leadoff double off Aaron Cook moved the Colorado Rockies’ no-no count to 2,638 games, and the Tampa Bay Rays had the day off so their mark sits at 1,887 games.

7,574: Mets win on Livan’s strong start, key hits by Francoeur and Murphy

Monday, July 20th, 2009

Livan Hernandez provided the strong start and Jeff Francoeur led the offense as the Mets bounced back from a tough series in Atlanta with a 6-2 win over the Washington Nationals.

Francoeur had a 3-for-4 night with a homer and two RBIs, and Daniel Murphy went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs. Angel Pagan and Luis Castillo each knocked in a run.

Hernandez yielded just two earned runs over seven innings, giving up five hits and two walks while striking out three. He lost his no-hitter in the first inning on a Ronnie Belliard single, making it 7,574 New York Mets games without a no-hitter.

Pedro Felicano, Sean Green and Francisco Rodriguez closed out the game without allowing any Nats’ runs.

7,566: Mets win streak snapped at … um … 1

Thursday, July 9th, 2009
The win streak ends!

The Los Angeles Dodgers jumped on Livan Hernandez early and often Thursday night en route to an 11-2 victory to snap the Mets’ one-game win streak.

Hernandez got off to a horrid start, giving up a leadoff ground-rule double to Rafael Furcal during a four-run first inning. Not only did it advance our NoNoHitters.com count to 7,566 New York Mets games without a no-no, but it also forced an update of our No-hitters killed by first at bat page for the 23rd time this season. And things got worse from there, as Hernandez yielded 8 runs on 11 hits and four walks.

Considering I’m running out of things to say about the Mets, I’ll just share a Haiku written this week by my sister Leah and her daughter, Hannah:

Mets are on the tube
Twenty-three innings, no runs
Sadly, I am a fan

7,561: Another bad start, this time a loss

Friday, July 3rd, 2009
Not good, Livan

Livan Hernandez gave up seven runs in three innings of work as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the New York Mets 7-2 at Citizens Bank Park.

Hernandez lost his no-hitter on the first batter when Jimmy Rollins doubled, making it 7,561 #Mets games without a no-no. That means another update for our No-hitters killed by first at bat page. – the 20th time we’ve had to update it this season.

Nick Evans and Brian Schneider got RBIs in the seventh, but that’s about it for highlights.

7,556: Subway series is over, and that’s a good thing

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

OK, so the Yankees beat the Mets again. If you want to read about details of the game, there are plenty of stories out there. This post will not be one of them. Frankly, I’m sick of fretting about it.

So here’s all you need to know related to our NoNoHitters.com count: The game started with a leadoff double off the left-field wall by Derek Jeter that quickly eliminated the possibility of the first New York Mets no-hitter. It advanced our NoNoHitters.com count to 7,556 games, and – as always – you can visit our No-hitters killed by first at bat for details on these quick exits.

Other than that, the Subway Series is over, and that’s a good thing.

7,551: Pineiro’s 2-hit shutout shuts down Mets

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009
Where’s the O?

Joel Pineiro pitched a complete-game two-hit shutout Tuesday night as the St. Louis Cardinals topped the Mets 3-0 at Citi Field.

The Mets didn’t get their second hit until the ninth inning, when pinch-hitter Jeremy Reed lined a single to center. Luis Castillo got the Mets’ first hit in the third with a single up the middle.

Pineiro also broke up Livan Hernandez’s no-hitter with a hard-hit double to left in the third, making it 7,551 New York Mets games without a no-hitter. Brendan Ryan followed with a sacrifice bunt that Hernandez fielded quickly and turned to throw to third, but Piniero wasn’t running and Ryan hustled to reach first safely. Skip Schumaker hit a grounder to first which Daniel Murphy fielded but blew the throw to second to let Piniero score.

Albert Pujols made it 3-0 with a 2 RBI single to left in the seventh.

7,546: K-Rod blows save to waste strong Livan start

Thursday, June 18th, 2009
This is getting old

Francisco Rodriguez blew his first second save of the second Thursday night (Castillo’s dropped popup was the first) as the Mets wasted a strong start by Livan Hernandez with a 5-4 loss at Camden Yards.

After Matt Wieters led off the inning with a double, K-Rod walked Nolan Reimold and Brian Roberts laid down a bunt in an attempt to advance the runners. Mets’ catcher Omir Santos grabbed the ball and threw a strike to third, but pinch runner Felix Pie beat out the throw to load the bases with no outs.

Rodriguez walked Adam Jones to tie the game, and after a strikeout, Huff lined a single to right for the walk-off win.

Hernandez pitched 7 innings, giving up two earned runs on eight hits and one walk. He lost his no-hitter in the second inning when Melvin Mora singled to right center field, advancing our NoNoHitters.com county to 7,545 New York Mets games without a no-no.

Orioles starter Jason Berken stymied the Mets early, holding them to no runs on just one hit through five, as Berken’s offense built him a 2-0 lead. Mets second-baseman Luis Castillo helped limit the damage by snagging a Huff bases-loaded liner to end the fifth inning.

David Wright got the Mets on the scoreboard in the sixth by hitting a sacrifice fly to score Alex Cora (who led off the inning with a single), and Ryan Church knocked home Carlos Beltran with a single to right to tie the game at 2.

Cora again started a rally in the seventh by singling and stealing second. Daniel Murphy knocked him in with a double, and Beltran singled Murphy home to make it 4-2.

The O’s fought back for a run in the bottom of the eighth. After Aubrey Huff doubled to right off Pedro Feliciano, Mora moved him over to third with a single off Sean Green. Luke Scott hit a ball into the hole between first and second, but Castillo made a diving grab and threw to first for a key out, although Huff was able to score. Green struck out former Met Ty Wigginton on a sweet breaking ball to preserve the Mets’ lead and send it to the ninth.

We won’t rehash the ninth again.

7,541: Ugh! Castillo drops easy pop-up in ninth to hand Yanks win

Friday, June 12th, 2009

Luis Castillo dropped an easy pop-up with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to hand the Yankees a 9-8 win at the new Yankee Stadium for the first game of the 2009 Subway Series.

The Mets had an 8-7 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth. Closer Francisco Rodriguez let Derek Jeter reach on a single up the middle and walked issued an intentional fourth-ball to Teixeira before setting up a two-out K-Rod vs. A-Rod battle. K-Rod spotted A-Rod a 3-0 count before throwing a call strike and then getting Alex to launch a high fly-ball just past second that should have been an easy snag.

But Castillo one-handed it, and Jeter and Teixeira scored for a devastating walk-off win. This one was bad … just bad.

The Bronx Bombers lived up their name Friday night with four dingers off Mets’ pitchers – three of them from starter Livan Hernandez. Hernandez lost his no-hitter in the second inning when Robinson Cano blasted a home run to right, giving the Yanks an early 1-0 lead and advancing our NoNoHitters.com count to 7,541 games.

The Mets were able to take a 2-1 lead in the third by stringing together some Joba Chamberlain walks and hit-batsmen, but Mark Teixeira made it 3-2 Yankees by knocking an outside pitch over the right-center field fence in the bottom half of the inning.

The Mets retook the lead in the fourth with a four-run rally off reliever Brett Tomko.

Carlos Beltran kicked it off with double in the gap that was misplayed by Nick Swisher. After Beltran stole third and David Wright walked, Ryan Church doubled home both of them with a drive into right-center. Church reached third on the play when Cano’s throw home hit Wright.

Gary Sheffield then stepped up and ripped a two-run homer down the left field line to extend the Mets’ lead to 6-3.

Jeter added another run with a homer in the fifth before pulling ahead in the sixth after Hernandez got the hook when Cano singled up the middle and Posado walked (after blasting a just-foul shot down the right field line). Mets manager Jerry Manuel brought in AAA newcomer Jon Switzer, who served up a meatball that Hideki Matsui sent flying to right to make it 7-6 Yankees.

Sheffield helped the Mets get even in the seventh with a leadoff double that was followed by a Daniel Murphy single. The infield set up at double-play depth to concede the tying run, and that’s exactly what happened as Fernando Tatis hit into a 4-6-3 to score Sheffield.

The Mets scored what should have been the winning run in the eighth inning when Wright doubled home Beltran.

7,537: Mets score early, Livan holds Nats scoreless in 7-1 win

Sunday, June 7th, 2009
That’s better

The Mets scored five first-inning runs and Livan Hernandez threw seven scoreless innings Sunday for a 7-0 victory against the Washington Nationals.

Livan Hernandez gave up just four hits and four walks to improve to 5-1 on the season. He lost his no-hitter in the third inning when Cristian Guzman singled to make it 7,537 New York Mets games without a no-no.

The Mets quickly got on the scoreboard when Alex Cora drew a leadoff walk and Fernando Martinez followed by driving a sinker to deep center for an RBI double. After Martinez advanced to third on a Carlos Beltran ground-out and Wright drew a walk and stole second, Martinez scored on a wild pitch.

Daniel Murphy (2-for-4) made it 3-0 by driving in Wright with an RBI single, and Ryan Church (2-for-5) followed with a double to deep center but Razor Shines held up Murphy at third. Murphy scored and Church advanced to third on a Brian Schneider sac fly to right, and Church made it 5-0 by scoring on Craig Stammen’s second wild pitch of the inning.

Wright (2-for-3) singled home Cora in the seventh and Beltran knocked home Martinez in the ninth with a double to add a couple more runs.

Next up is the Phillies.

7,532: Eighth-inning bullpen breakdowns are so 2008

Monday, June 1st, 2009
So 2008

The Mets’ bullpen – J.J. Putz in particular – gave up five eighth-inning runs Monday night, handing the Pittsburgh Pirates the first game of a three-game series 8-5.

Mets starter Livan Hernandez left the game with a 5-3 lead but would not get the “W.” He lost his no-hitter on the leadoff hitter when Nyjer Morgan blooped a single to center that Jeremy Reed seemed to have lost in the sunlight. It marked the 7,532th New York Mets game without a no-no, and the 700th time a leadoff single killed a no-hitter. (See our No-hitters killed by first at bat for all the stats on leadoff hits.)

The Mets took a 2-0 lead in the second with a double by Jeremy Reed, a triple by Wilson Valdez and a single by Brian Schneider. New York added another run in the third when Gary Sheffield drove in Fernando Martinez on a fielder’s choice, and back-to-back doubles by Reed and Valdez made it 5-0.

The Pirates cut the Mets’ lead to 5-3 in the fourth on a double and triple by the Brothers LaRoche and a Jason Jaramillo RBI ground-out.

Then came the eighth. J.J. Putz, who took the ball from Pedro Feliciano after Feliciano gave up a leadoff double followed by a ground out, yielded four straight hits that led to four earned runs. Very Heilmanesque.
