7,619: Murphy, Pelfrey lead Mets to 4-2 win over Cubs

Sunday, September 6th, 2009
A great game

Daniel Murphy drove in all four Mets runs with three-quarters of a cycle and Mike Pelfrey pitched eight strong innings to lead New York to a 4-2 win over the Chicago Cubs at Citi Field Sunday.

Murphy homered into the Pepsi Porch in the fourth inning, drove in Luis Castillo with a single in the fifth and sent Pelfrey and David Wright home in the seventh with a triple over the center fielder Sam Fuld’s head.

Brian Schneider and Angel Pagan each had multi-hit days.

Pelfrey gave up just one run on five hits during his eight-inning gem, losing his no-hitter on the first batter when Fuld singled. It marked no no-hitter No. 7,619 for the Mets, and it was the 1,300th time a leadoff single has killed a potential Mets’ no-no. (Visit our No-hitters killed by first at bat page for more than you wanted to know on these early break-ups.)

Francisco Rodriguez got two outs in the ninth before giving up a walk and a double to make it 4-2, but he retired pinch-hitter Kosuke Fukudome with a grounder to first for his 30th save of the season.

With the win, the Mets won their first series since July.

7,614: Pelfrey rocked in 8-3 loss to Colorado

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009
Bad start to roadtrip

The Mets spotted Mike Pelfrey a 2-0 lead, but he put in a rocky start as Colorado topped New York 8-3 at Coors Field.

The Mets hit Rockies’ starter Jorge De La Rosa hard in the first inning for four hits, but a baserunning blunder by Angel Pagan on Luis Castillo’s single cost the Mets more. He for some reason thought Castillo’s liner was caught, started heading back to first and was forced out at second.

David Wright returned to the lineup sporting the new oversized protective helmet and hit the first pitch he saw for a single, and a Jeff Francoeur sac-fly and a Fernando Tatis double gave the Mets a 2-0 lead.

Pelfrey lost his no-hitter in the first inning on a Seth Smith single to shortstop, bumping our NoNoHitters.com count to 7,614 New York Mets games without a no-no. He walked Todd Helton and Brad Hawpe to load the bases, then walked Garrett Atkins to give up a run.

In the second inning, Carlos Gonzalez blasted a two-run homer into the right-field second deck to give the Rockies the lead, and Colorado added an unearned run to make it 4-2. Todd Helton put the game out of reach in the fourth with a three-run homer.

The line on Pelfrey: Seven runs (six earned) on six hits and four walks over four innings of work.

Recent call-up Lance Broadway, a Met courtesy of the Ramon Castro trade, threw scoreless two innings.

The Mets made it 7-3 in the seventh with back-to-back triples by Cory Sullivan and Angel Pagan, but Sean Green gave up three singles and a walk in the seventh to give that run back.

7,604: Pelfrey, bullpen help Mets top Phillies

Friday, August 21st, 2009
Good outing, Pelf

Mike Pelfrey held the Phillies to two runs and the bullpen finished the job Friday night for a 4-2 win at Citi Field.

Jeff Francoeur went 3-for-4 with a solo homer, and Angel Pagan, Luis Castillo and Daniel Murphy all had 2-for-4 nights.

Pelfrey lost his no-hitter in the first inning on a Chase Utley single, advancing our count to 7,604 New York Mets games without a no-hitter. He gave up just six hits and two walks during his six innings, striking out five.

Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez kept things “interesting” in the ninth by allowing a one-out Jimmy Rollins double and a Shane Victorino single, but he struck out Utley and Ryan Howard to close the door for the save.

7,576: You know it’s bad when the Nats take 2-of-3

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

The Mets managed just four hits against the Washington Nationals Wednesday night during a 3-1 loss at Nationals Park.

Starter Mike Pelfrey lost the no-hitter right away when Nyjer Morgan led off with a single, making it 7,576 New York Mets games without a no-hitter. It was the ninth time this season Pelfrey yielded a hit to the leadoff batter, and you can find all of the details of the 942 times this has happened in Mets history on our No-hitters killed by first at bat page.

Pelfrey kept the Mets in the game, yielding three runs on six hits while walking two.

The Mets lone run came on a triple by Angel Pagan, who scored on the play when Cristian Guzman threw the ball by third.

7,571: Not a good night for Mets, who lose 11-0

Friday, July 17th, 2009
2009 is fading fast

The Atlanta Braves held the Mets to two hits while racking up 11 runs Friday night as the Mets woes continued with a shutout.

Mets’ starter Mike Pelfrey gave up nine runs on nine hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings of work. He lost his no-hitter in the first inning when Martin Prado doubled, making it 7,571 New York Mets games without a no-hitter.

The only hits Braves’ starter Jair Jurrjens gave up were a second-inning leadoff double by Gary Sheffield and a fourth-inning double by David Wright.

Sheffield later left the game with a hamstring injury.

And more bad news … the Phillies won again, so the Mets are now 8 1/2 games out of first.

7,569: Win streak heading into long-needed break

Sunday, July 12th, 2009
A little momentum?

The Mets broke an 80-inning no-homer streak Sunday for a 9-7 win that gives them a little bit of momentum heading into the All-Star break.

Brian Schneider and Fernando Tatis each connected for solo shots in the seventh inning, and the Home Run Apple was so out of practice it couldn’t handle two so close together.

The bullpen nearly blew the 9-3 lead but held on for the win, keeping the Mets 6 1/2 games behind the Philadelphia Phillies in the N.L. East. New York finishes the first half with a 42-45 record.

Starter Mike Pelfrey gave the Mets a quality start, throwing seven innings of five-hit ball while yielding three earned runs. He walked two and struck out four. He lost his no-hitter in the first inning on a Willy Taveras single for the 7,569th New York Mets game without a no-no.

Gary Sheffield was 2-for-5 with 3 RBIs, Daniel Murphy was 2-for-5 with 2 RBIs and Luis Castillo was 3-for-4 with three runs scored.

The Mets’ next game is Thursday night in Atlanta.

7,564: The slide continues …

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009
I have no comment

Mike Pelfrey gave up five runs in three innings of work, and the Mets couldn’t score a run as the slide continued Tuesday night with an 8-0 loss at Citi Field.

Pelfrey lost his no-hitter in the first inning when Orlando Hudson singled to left, making it 7,564 New York Mets games without a no-no.

7,559: Pelfrey strong as Mets win 1-0

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009
Thank you Pelf

Mike Pelfrey threw 7 2/3 innings of shutout ball and Ryan Church singled home the game’s lone run Wednesday as the New York Mets topped the Milwaukee Brewers 1-0 at Miller Park.

Pelfrey broke the Mets’ five-game losing streak by allowing just six hits and two walks during his start. Pelfrey lost his no-hitter in the second inning when Mat Gamel hit an infield single to third, making it 7,559 New York Mets without a no-no.

The game’s only run came when Luis Castillo led off the sixth with a ground-rule double to left and Church singled him home.

Sean Green was called upon to get the last out in the eighth after Pelfrey gave up a single and a walk, and Green did his job.

Francisco Rodriguez gave up a leadoff single up in the middle in the ninth and Prince Fielder followed with a liner up the middle, but Alex Cora was there to snag it and nearly turned the double play. K-Rod retired the next to batters for his 21st save of the season.

7,554: Error-filled second dooms Mets, Yanks win 9-1

Friday, June 26th, 2009

C.C. Sabathia shut the Mets down for seven innings Friday night to lead the Yankees to a 9-1 win over the Mets to begin the Flushing Meadows portion of the Subway Series.

Mike Pelfrey lost his no-hitter when the leadoff hitter stepped into the box, as Brett Gardner (who had a 5-for-5 night) singled up the middle to make it 7,554 New York Mets games without a no-no. (All your favorite stats on quick no-no kills are on our No-hitters killed by first at bat page.

Gary Sheffield’s solo homer – one of just three Mets’ hits – was the only highlight, so let’s list the lowlights and be done with this game.

  • An embarrassing four-run second inning that began with a David Wright throwing error doomed us early. The inning degraded further with an Alex Cora throwing error to second, and got worse when Nick Evans fielded a ball right on top of first base yet couldn’t get the out. By this time, I was expecting to hear the organist break into “The Toreador.”
  • Elmer Dessens looked great in the seventh by getting a couple of pop ups to end a jam, then gave up solo homers to Gardner and Alex Rodriguez in the eighth.
  • Bobby Parnell came in the eighth inning, dropped the ball for a balk and then threw a wild pitch. The runner on first advanced two bases by the time Parnell threw his first pitch.
  • Sean Green wasn’t much better, giving up two runs on three hits.
    • That’s all folks.

7,549: Mets’ pitchers notch 17-hitter as Rays win 10-6

Sunday, June 21st, 2009
17-hitter – not even close

The Tampa Bay Rays jumped on the Mets pitching staff for 17 hits Sunday during a 10-6 win at Citi Field, handing the Mets another series loss.

The no-hitter was lost immediately when B.J. Upton led off with a single, making it 7,549 New York Mets games without a no-no. It was the 935th time a Mets’ opponent opened the game with a hit, and the 705th time a no-hitter was killed with a leadoff single. (Details always available on our No-hitters killed by first at bat page.)

The Mets scored the game’s first runs in the second. David Wright led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a passed ball. Gary Sheffield drew a walk, and Ryan Church moved Wright and Sheffield over on a ground out to first. Wright scored on a wild pitch, and Pelfrey lined a single to right to score Sheffield.

Pelfrey was solid through four but got tagged for eight runs in the fifth. The Mets’ bullpen allowed the Rays to bat-around for another four-run inning during a top-of-the seventh interrupted by a rain delay.
