7,754: Santana takes no-no into 6th, Mets win 1-0

Saturday, August 7th, 2010
Close, no cigar

Johan Santana took a Mets no-hitter into the sixth inning Saturday night as New York topped the Philadelphia Phillies 1-0 at Citizens Bank Park.

Santana lost his no-no on a Placido Polanco single, advancing our NoNoHitters.com count to 7,754 New York Mets games with no such rare feat.

His extended outing allowed us to update our Lost Mets no-hitters that reached at least the fifth inning page for the first time since April 20, when Mike Pelfrey took one against the Chicago Cubs into the fifth. That day, Mike Fontenot poked a one-out sinker the opposite way into left for a line single that ended his bid.

Jeff Francoeur scored the game’s only run by poking an opposite field homer over the right field fence in the seventh inning.

Santana wound up yielding five hits over 7 1/3 innings, and Francisco Rodriguez recorded a 5-out save.

7,692: Mets sweep Phils with three straight shutouts

Shutout sweep!

The New York Mets completed a shutout sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies Thursday night with a 3-0 win at Citi Field.

Mets starter Mike Pelfrey, having sat through a near two-hour rain delay, improved to 7-1 by pitching seven innings of three-hit ball, though he did walk five. He lost his no-hitter on a third-inning Shane Victorino single, advancing our NoNoHitters.com count to 7,692 New York Mets games without a no-no.

Jose Reyes had a 3-for-4 night, including a run scored in the first inning and a two-RBI double in the seventh. Jason Bay knocked in Reyes with a double in the first.

7,691: Mets shut out Phils second straight night

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010
Shutout again!

The New York Mets shut out the Philadelphia Phillies for the second straight night Wednesday, thanks to a Rod Barajas-and-Jose Reyes-powered offense and six strong innings from Hisanori Takahashi.

The 5-0 win was the Mets’ fourth straight victory.

Takahashi gave up just five hits and didn’t walk a single batter while striking out six. He lost his no-hitter in the second inning on a Ben Francisco single, bumping our NoNoHitters.com county to 7,691 New York Mets games with no no-no.

Barajas got the Mets on the board in the second inning with a sacrifice fly, and Jose Reyes made it 2-0 in the third with his first homer of the year.

Barajas knocked in two more with a sixth-inning double, and Reyes drove home Barajas with a single later in the inning.

The Mets go for the sweep at Citi Field tomorrow night, with Mike Pelfrey set to battle Cole Hamels.

7,690: Dickey gives Phillies a knuckle sandwich, Mets win 8-0

Dominant

Jason Bay and Jeff Francoeur each had two RBIs and knuckleballer R.A. Dickey dominated the Philadelphia Phillies for six solid innings to lead the New York Mets to an 8-0 win at Citi Field.

Dickey held the Phillies scoreless on seven hits and three walks while striking out seven. He lost his no-hitter in the second inning on a Ryan Howard single for the 7,690th New York Mets game with no no-no.

Jose Reyes had a 3-for-5 night with an RBI triple.

Raul Valdes threw three scoreless innings in relief and contributed with his bat with an eighth inning RBI double.

7,669: Let’s not talk much about Mets’ 11-5 loss

Sunday, May 2nd, 2010
Santana homerfest

This was one of those games that’s not worthy of sentences and paragraphs. Here are bullet points:

  • Mets lose 11-5 to Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.
  • Santana loses no-hitter on first-inning solo homer by Placido Polanco, driving up count to 7,669 New York Mets games without a no-hitter
  • Line on Santana: 3 2/3 innings, 10 runs on eight hits (four of them homers) and two walks, just a token strikeout
  • Few highlights: David Wright’s 1st inning three-run homer; Rod Barajas goes 2-for-3 with two run shot in fourth

Enough said.

7,668: Phils pay back Mets with 10-0 whopping

Saturday, May 1st, 2010
Payback time

The Philadelphia Phillies pounced on Mets starter Mike Pelfrey for six runs in the fourth inning Saturday to pay back New York with a 10-0 defeat.

The loss – the Mets’ first after eight straight wins – comes just a day after the Mets crushed the Phillies 9-1 in the series opener.

Though lead-off hitter Shane Victorino killed Pelfrey’s chance for a no-hitter with a double on the first at-bat (that’s 7,668 games for our count), the game remained scoreless until the fourth inning when a couple shallow fly balls started the downtown.

Chase Utley floated a ball just past shortstop Jose Reyes, and it dropped in for a single when Reyes couldn’t quite get it into the web of his mitt. Then, after Ryan Howard singled Utley over to second, Jayson Werth floated a shallow fly ball to center that second-baseman Alex Cora bobbled and let drop for a single.

That let Utley cross the plate, marking Pelfrey’s first earned run in 27 innings.

The Phillies added five more in the inning on Juan Castro’s two-RBI double and Shane Victorino’s three-run homer.

Meanwhile, Roy Halladay held the Mets to just three hits for a complete-game shutout.

7,667: Mets crush Phils 9-1 to take Game 1 of series

Friday, April 30th, 2010
Phabulous!

Jonathon Niese provided the strong start, and the Mets’ offense came through big-time as New York topped the Philadelphia Phillies 9-1 at Citizens Bank Park.

The Mets jumped on the scoreboard in the second inning with a two-run homer by David Wright and a solo shot by Jeff Francoeur.

Rod Barajas hit homers in the fifth and ninth innings, both solo shots, and also got an RBI double. An Angel Pagan triple and a Jose Reyes single provided the other two Mets’ RBIs.

Niese lost his no-hitter in the third inning on a Jayson Werth single, making it 7,667 New York Mets games without a no-hitter. He threw seven solid innings, yielding just one earned run on four hits and a walk while striking out seven.

7,604: Pelfrey, bullpen help Mets top Phillies

Friday, August 21st, 2009
Good outing, Pelf

Mike Pelfrey held the Phillies to two runs and the bullpen finished the job Friday night for a 4-2 win at Citi Field.

Jeff Francoeur went 3-for-4 with a solo homer, and Angel Pagan, Luis Castillo and Daniel Murphy all had 2-for-4 nights.

Pelfrey lost his no-hitter in the first inning on a Chase Utley single, advancing our count to 7,604 New York Mets games without a no-hitter. He gave up just six hits and two walks during his six innings, striking out five.

Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez kept things “interesting” in the ninth by allowing a one-out Jimmy Rollins double and a Shane Victorino single, but he struck out Utley and Ryan Howard to close the door for the save.

7,563: Phils win on pair of homers off Santana

Sunday, July 5th, 2009
0 not enough for Johan

Johan Santana limited the Philadelphia Phillies to just two runs on three hits, but it wasn’t enough as his team couldn’t score him a single run during a 2-0 loss at Citizens Bank Park.

Santana lost his no-hitter on the opening batter when Jimmy Rollins homered to left, advancing our NoNoHitters.com count to 7,563 New York Mets games without a no-hitter. It was the 53rd time a leadoff hitter opened a game against the Mets with a homer (visit our No-hitters killed by first at bat page for more details.)

The game’s only other run came in the sixth inning, when Chase Utley homered to right.

The Mets’ only hits were a single by Jeremy Reed, a bunt single by Santana and a pair of single by Luis Castillo.

7,562: Another Mets-Phillies game, another loss

Saturday, July 4th, 2009
Beat by the Phils again

Jamie Moyer held the Mets hitless until the fourth as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Mets 4-1 at Citizens Bank Park.

Starter Fernando Nieve scored the Mets only run with a fifth-inning single to left that scored Nick Evans. He lost his no-hitter in the first inning on a Shane Victorino single, making it 7,562 New York Mets games without a no-no.

It looks like Nieve will keep his spot in the rotation as Tim Redding is being sent to the bullpen to make room for Oliver Perez.
