7,604: Pelfrey, bullpen help Mets top Phillies

Friday, August 21st, 2009
Good outing, Pelf

Mike Pelfrey held the Phillies to two runs and the bullpen finished the job Friday night for a 4-2 win at Citi Field.

Jeff Francoeur went 3-for-4 with a solo homer, and Angel Pagan, Luis Castillo and Daniel Murphy all had 2-for-4 nights.

Pelfrey lost his no-hitter in the first inning on a Chase Utley single, advancing our count to 7,604 New York Mets games without a no-hitter. He gave up just six hits and two walks during his six innings, striking out five.

Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez kept things “interesting” in the ninth by allowing a one-out Jimmy Rollins double and a Shane Victorino single, but he struck out Utley and Ryan Howard to close the door for the save.

7,563: Phils win on pair of homers off Santana

Sunday, July 5th, 2009
0 not enough for Johan

Johan Santana limited the Philadelphia Phillies to just two runs on three hits, but it wasn’t enough as his team couldn’t score him a single run during a 2-0 loss at Citizens Bank Park.

Santana lost his no-hitter on the opening batter when Jimmy Rollins homered to left, advancing our NoNoHitters.com count to 7,563 New York Mets games without a no-hitter. It was the 53rd time a leadoff hitter opened a game against the Mets with a homer (visit our No-hitters killed by first at bat page for more details.)

The game’s only other run came in the sixth inning, when Chase Utley homered to right.

The Mets’ only hits were a single by Jeremy Reed, a bunt single by Santana and a pair of single by Luis Castillo.

7,562: Another Mets-Phillies game, another loss

Saturday, July 4th, 2009
Beat by the Phils again

Jamie Moyer held the Mets hitless until the fourth as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Mets 4-1 at Citizens Bank Park.

Starter Fernando Nieve scored the Mets only run with a fifth-inning single to left that scored Nick Evans. He lost his no-hitter in the first inning on a Shane Victorino single, making it 7,562 New York Mets games without a no-no.

It looks like Nieve will keep his spot in the rotation as Tim Redding is being sent to the bullpen to make room for Oliver Perez.

7,561: Another bad start, this time a loss

Friday, July 3rd, 2009
Not good, Livan

Livan Hernandez gave up seven runs in three innings of work as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the New York Mets 7-2 at Citizens Bank Park.

Hernandez lost his no-hitter on the first batter when Jimmy Rollins doubled, making it 7,561 #Mets games without a no-no. That means another update for our No-hitters killed by first at bat page. – the 20th time we’ve had to update it this season.

Nick Evans and Brian Schneider got RBIs in the seventh, but that’s about it for highlights.

7,540: Mets lose in extra innings again as Ibanez homers off Takahashi

Thursday, June 11th, 2009
Extra innings not kind

Raul Ibanez blasted a 10th-inning three-run homer off Ken Takahashi as the Philadelphia Phillies topped the New York Mets 6-3 Thursday night at a foggy Citi Field.

The loss, the first-place Phils’ second come-from-behind victory in as many nights, puts the Mets four games back in the N.L. East as they head into a weekend series against the New York Yankees.

The Mets wasted a strong start from Tim Redding, who threw seven innings while giving up three runs on six hits and no walks. Redding gave up a third-inning single to Pedro Feliz to advance our NoNoHitters.com count to 7,540 New York Mets game without a no-hitter.

All three Mets runs were a Luis Castillo-Carlos Beltran production.

In the first, Castillo led off with a double and Beltran drove him home on a ground out. In the third, Castillo hit a one-out single and Beltran doubled him home. In the fifth, Castillo again led off the inning with a double, and Beltran knocked him in on a sacrifice fly.

7,539: Utley’s 11th-inning homer sinks Mets

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009
Utley homer = ugly ending

Chase Utley hit a solo homer off Bobby Parnell in the top of the 11th – his second of the night – to give the Phillies a 5-4 victory at Citi Field.

Mets starter Mike Pelfrey lost his no-hitter in the first when Utley singled to advance our count to 7,539 games, but Pelfrey more than made up for it with his bat.

After Utley gave the Phillies a 1-0 lead in the top of the third with a solo homer to right, Pelfrey scored the tying run after leading off the bottom of the third with a double to left-center. Luis Castillo advanced Pelfrey to third on an infield single, and Alex Cora sent him home on a fielder’s choice.

New York rallied for three more runs in the fourth with a rally that began with a David Wright single. After Fernando Tatis grounded out, Ryan Church walked and Omir Santos lined a single to left to load the bases.

The Mets then took a 4-1 lead on three consecutive RBI singles, as Pelfrey blooped one just inside the right-field line, Luis Castillo hit a little flair to short right and Alex Cora shot another ball up the middle. Carlos Beltran ended the inning by hitting into a 5-4-3 double play, but replays clearly showed that Beltran was safe, so Pelfrey should have been the Mets’ fifth run.

Pelfrey pitched six strong innings of three-hit ball before getting into trouble in the seventh by giving up three straight singles, the last being a long fly ball to center that bounced off the heal of Beltran’s glove.

Sean Green came in and gave up a single to Pedro Feliz that made it 4-2, and then Wright mishandled an in-between hop to make it 4-3. Green struck out pinch-hitter Paul Bako, but Jayson Werth was able to score when Jimmy Rollins hit into a fielder’s choice. That closed the books on Pelfrey, who was charged with four runs (two of them earned) on six hits and two walks.

Pedro Feliciano (1 in.) and Francisco Rodriguez (2 in.) kept the game even through the tenth, and the Mets had a chance to win it in the bottom half of the inning.

After Fernando Martinez reached base on a pinch-hit two-out single, David Wright drove a ball into the right-center gap that was robbed by a diving Jayson Werth. It was a risky play as it clearly would have scored the winning run if it hit grass, but Werth knew he could get it … and did.

Utley then stepped up to the plate in the top of the 11th and gave the Phillies the last run they’d need with a solo homer just over the right-field fence near the foul pole.

7,538: Homers aplenty, but Santana secures win with bat, glove

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009
Citi Field homerfest

Johan Santana gave up four round-trippers but used his bat to help his team retake the lead Tuesday night as the Mets topped the Phillies 6-5 in rare Citi Field homerfest.

With runners and first and second with one out in the sixth, Santana faked a two-strike sacrifice bunt and drove a hanging slider down the right field line for an RBI double to tie the game at 4. Alex Cora followed a couple batters later with a single up the middle to give New York a 5-4 lead.

Santana (7 IN, 4 ER, 2H, 2 BB) also helped with his glove, snagging a Shane Victorino liner in the seventh and throwing to first for the inning-ending double-play.

But he got the yank in the eighth after Chase Utley led off the inning with a homer, the night’s fourth off Johan. Santana made it clear he didn’t want to give up the mound, but Mets’ skipper Jerry Manuel forced him to turn it over to the bullpen, which did its job to earn Santana his eighth victory of the season.

The Mets got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second when David Wright blasted a home run over the left-center field fence, his first dinger in about a hundred at-bats.

Santana lost his no-hitter in the third inning when Pedro Feliz hit a leadoff double to left (making it 7,528 New York Mets games without a no-no), but Johan was able to escape the inning unscathed.

The Mets rallied for two more runs in the third with a rally kicked off by Alex Cora, who drove an inside fastball into the right-field corner for a double. Beltran then blasted the next pitch (a hanging curve) over the left-field fence to make it 3-0. The Mets tried to extend the rally by loading the bases with one out, but neither Ryan Church or Omir Santos could drive runners home.

The Phillies got a couple back in the fourth on back-to-back homers by Ryan Howard and Ibanez. Howard took a hanging slider for a ride well past Citi Field’s cavernous right-center field, and Ibanez lined a homer over the MoZone in right. Then, with two outs in the top of the sixth, Santana hung a high change-up down the middle, and Jimmy Rollins shot it over the left field fence to make it 4-3 Phillies.

Fernando Tatis led off the bottom of the sixth with a double off the left-center field wall and Church was ready to bunt him over to third, but Tatis got the base for free on a failed pickoff attempt by catcher Carlos Ruiz. Tatis headed home on Church’s grounder to first and he clearly slid under Ruiz’s juggling glove, but he umpire unfortunately didn’t see it that way.

The Mets, however, still rallied to retake the lead.

Ryan Church got the Mets an important sixth run in the bottom of the seventh by hitting Citi Field’s first homer into the new apple, just past the center field fence. It didn’t do any damage, as the apple still was able to rise.

After Bobby Parnell gave up a single after Santana was pulled in the seventh after, lefty Pedro Feliciano was called upon to pitch to Howard and Ibanez. Feliciano got Howard to hit into a 4-6-3 double-play and Ibanez to ground out to second.

K-Rod let Rollins reach base on a leadoff single but got a strike out, a fielder’s choice and another strikeout for the save.

The Mets are now two games back of the Phils in the N.L. East standings.

7,509: First-inning homers, Pelfrey’s strong start lift Mets above .500

Thursday, May 7th, 2009
We’re over .500

The New York Mets got a strong start from Mike Pelfrey and Carlos Beltran and David Wright each hit two-run homers in the first inning as the Mets topped the Philadelphia Phillies 7-5 to move above .500.

Pelfrey gave up three runs on eight hits and a walk over seven innings of work. He lost his no-hitter on the game’s first pitch when Jimmy Rollins blooped a single over third to make it 7,509 New York Mets games without a no-no.

It was the 924th time a Mets game began with an opponent’s leadoff hit, and the 692nd time a potential no-hitter was broken up by a leadoff single. (Visit our No-hitters killed by first at bat page for more details.)

The Mets are now 14-13 and just a half-game behind the first-place Phillies.

Francisco Rodriguez got his fourth save in four nights.

7,508: Mets’ 2 hits enough support for Santana, who gets W in 1-0 pitchers’ duel

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009
Pitching school is in session

The Mets’ Johan Santana and the Phillies’ Chan Ho Park allowed a total of just three hits during their starts Wednesday night as New York nipped Philadelphia 1-0 in a classic National League Pitcher’s duel.

Santana allowed just two hits and three walks over his seven innings while striking out 10. The first one, a third-inning single by Jimmy Rollins, advanced our NoNoHitters.com count to 7,508 New York Mets games without a no-hitter. The second was a leadoff ground-rule double in the seventh by Raul Ibanez, but Santana pitched out of the pickle to keep the game scoreless.

Park allowed just one hit – a Daniel Murphy fifth-inning double – and walked two while fanning five over six innings.

The Mets’ second and final hit, a seventh-inning Fernando Tatis single off reliever Chad Durbin, resulted in the game’s only run.

After Carlos Delgado drew a leadoff walk, Tatis hit a broken-bat slow-roller to third that Pedro Feliz fielded nicely but overthrew first base. He should have held the ball, as he had no chance of getting Tatis.

Carlos Delgado, still recovering from a sore hip, lumbered all the way home from first, and Phillies’ outfielder Jayson Werth hesitated before throwing home, allowing Delgado to score.

Pedro Feliciano faced trouble in the eighth when Shane Victorino blooped a double over first base, but Feliciano pitched out of the jam beautifully and stranded him at third. Francisco Rodriguez earned his eighth save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth.

Great game.

7,505: Green’s bases-loaded walk sinks Mets

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009
Ouch, that one hurt

Sean Green issued a walk-off walk to Shane Victorino in the bottom of the 10th inning to waste a Mets comeback and hand the Philadelphia Phillies a 6-5 win Saturday.

The Mets overcame another shaky start from Oliver Perez, but again couldn’t score late-inning runs to win a game.

Perez was sent to the clubhouse in the third after issuing a bases-loaded walk to opposing pitcher Jamie Moyer, his sixth base on balls during a 2 1/3-inning, four-run, 77-pitch debacle. Any chance of a no-hitter disappeared immediately when Victorino led off the bottom of the first with a triple, making it 7,505 New York Mets games without a no-no.

It was the 33rd time a Mets no-hitter was broken up by a leadoff triple, and the 923rd time the leadoff hitter killed a Mets no-no. (Our No-hitters killed by first at bat page has more details than you care to know about these games.)

Reliever Ken Takahashi entered with the bases loaded in the third and bailed out Perez with a double-play, then followed with two solid innings to give the Mets a chance to catch up.

The Mets took the lead during a two-out sixth-inning rally sparked by the bottom of the order. After tying the game on back-to-back homers by Daniel Murphy and Ramon Castro, Alex Cora followed with a pinch-hit triple, the team’s 12th three-bagger of the young season. After Reyes drew a walk, Luis Castillo knocked in Cora to give the Mets a 5-4 lead.

Unfortunately, Raul Ibanez tagged Pedro Feliciano for a solo shot to tie the game in the bottom of the inning to make it 5-5.

The Mets got a runner in scoring position in the top of the eighth and Carlos Beltran did his job with a two-out single, but Jayson Werth threw Omir Santos out at the plate. Beltran hit into a double-play with runners on first and second to end the top of the tenth.
