7,560: Mets overcome Redding’s horrid start, blown K-Rod save for 9-8 win

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009
Big comeback

The Mets overcame a horrid start by Tim Redding and a blown save by Francisco Rodriguez to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-8 Thursday afternoon during a rain-soaked makeup game at PNC Park.

Redding put in just 2 1/3 innings, giving up five earned runs on six hits and a pair of walks. He lost his no-hitter right away (well, rain delays aside) when Andrew McCutchen led off with a double to right, advancing our NoNoHitters.com count to 7,560 New York Mets games without a no-no.

McCutchen’s double earns Redding his first entry on our No-hitters killed by first at bat page – the 20th time we’ve had to update it this season.

Jerry Manuel had seen enough in the third, and he took the ball from Redding in the third and gave it to Pat Misch. Misch retired the only two batters he faced to let the Mets’ offense start chipping away at the deficit.

Fernando Tatis, Ryan Church and Nick Evans hit back-to-back-to-back singles in the fourth, and Daniel Murphy followed with a pinch-hit two RBI single to put New York on the scoreboard.

The Mets got back to work in the fifth when Alex Cora led off with a double, David Wright advanced him to third with a single and Gary Sheffield drove him in with a single. Church scored Wright on a single, and Evans knocked in Tatis with a single to tie the game at five. Jermy Reed’s pinch-hit sacrifice fly scored Church and gave the Mets a 6-5 lead.

Tatis’ two-run homer in the sixth extended the Mets’ lead to 8-5.

Garrett Jones blasted a Pedro Feliciano fastball over the right-center field wall in the seventh, cutting the Mets’ lead to 8-6 and putting Jones just a single shy of the cycle.

The Mets needed just three outs for the win, but Francisco Rodriguez gave up a two-run homer to Adam Laroche to tie the game at 8. The Pirates nearly had a walk-off win in the ninth, but Luis Castillo snagged a hard-hit liner to end the inning.

But they clawed for a run in the top of the tenth when Tatis was hit by a pitch, stole second and then scored on a Church single. Rodriguez retired the tenth for the win, instead of the save.

7,534: McCutchen kills no-hitter in first Major League at-bat

Thursday, June 4th, 2009
Another leadoff hit?

Twenty-two-year-old rookie Andrew McCutchen killed any possibility of a Mets no-hitter Thursday, singling in his first Major League at-bat to spark a four-run, first-inning rally that led the Pittsburgh Pirates to an 11-6 victory at PNC Park.

Mets starter Mike Pelfrey was pulled after a disastrous 3 2/3 innings, giving up nine runs (eight earned) on nine hits and four walks. A quick check of our No-hitters killed by first at bat page shows that McCutchen’s leadoff hit, which advanced our count to 7,434 New York Mets games without a no-hitter, is the sixth early no-no killer off Pelfrey this season, leaving him well set to break his 2008 mark of seven.

(Pelfrey’s most memorable leadoff gaff of course will always be the Padres’ Jody Gerut’s christening of the new Citi Field on April 13 with a leadoff homer.)

A few Mets’ highlights Thursday included Carlos Beltran, who bounced back from his lingering stomach virus by going 2-for-4 with a homer and double. David Wright went 2-for-3 with two walks, an RBI and two runs scored, and Fernando Martinez also had a pair of hits with an RBI double in the fifth.

But those performances did little to mask the fact that the Mets got swept by a sub-.500 team.

7,533: Santana perfect through 3 1/3 but Mets lose 3-1

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009
3 1/3 not enough

Johan Santana took a no-hitter in the fourth inning Tuesday, providing a brief glimmer of hope that the Mets’ 47-year drought might be coming to an end.

But it wasn’t to be, and Santana wound up yielding seven hits and three runs during a 3-1 loss at PNC Park.

Santana retired the first 10 batters he faced before Sanchez dropped a broken-bat blooper into shallow left field to bump our NoNoHitters.com count up to 7,533 New York Mets games without a no-no. We had been hoping we’d get to update our Lost Mets no-hitters that reached at least the fifth inning page for the first time this year, but the ball popped out of the glove of a diving Fernando Tatis.

One batter earlier, David Wright got in front of a hard-hit liner by the speedy Nyjer Morgan and made an amazing recovery to throw the first and save the no-no.

(For the record, Mets pitchers have reached the fifth inning without yielding a hit 258 times during the team’s 47 years of existence, the most recent performance being by Santana last year. Santana gave up a leadoff fifth-inning single to Troy Glaus during a 9-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on July 27, 2009.)

The Mets got runners in scoring position in the second and third innings but were unable to turn them into runs. Luis Castillo singled up the middle with runners on first and second in the third but Nate Mclouth threw out Jeremy Reed at the plate.

New York was finally able to squeeze out a run in the fourth after Ramon Martinez and Reed hit back-to-back singles and Santana pushed a perfect sacrifice bunt down the third-base line. Castillo then flied out to shallow center, and Martinez was able to tag up and score (although he injured his left hand on the play and left the game).

The Pirates tied the game at 1 in the fifth when Jason Jaramillo blasted a belt-high 2-1 fastball over the left field wall. Santana allowed two more runners in the inning, but turned a bang-bang 1-6-3 double-play to end the inning. Morgan appeared to beat out the throw at first, and he was thrown out of the game arguing the call.

The Pirates took a 3-1 lead in the sixth after Sanchez led-off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch, and then McLouth and Adam LaRoche hit back-to-back doubles.

7,532: Eighth-inning bullpen breakdowns are so 2008

Monday, June 1st, 2009
So 2008

The Mets’ bullpen – J.J. Putz in particular – gave up five eighth-inning runs Monday night, handing the Pittsburgh Pirates the first game of a three-game series 8-5.

Mets starter Livan Hernandez left the game with a 5-3 lead but would not get the “W.” He lost his no-hitter on the leadoff hitter when Nyjer Morgan blooped a single to center that Jeremy Reed seemed to have lost in the sunlight. It marked the 7,532th New York Mets game without a no-no, and the 700th time a leadoff single killed a no-hitter. (See our No-hitters killed by first at bat for all the stats on leadoff hits.)

The Mets took a 2-0 lead in the second with a double by Jeremy Reed, a triple by Wilson Valdez and a single by Brian Schneider. New York added another run in the third when Gary Sheffield drove in Fernando Martinez on a fielder’s choice, and back-to-back doubles by Reed and Valdez made it 5-0.

The Pirates cut the Mets’ lead to 5-3 in the fourth on a double and triple by the Brothers LaRoche and a Jason Jaramillo RBI ground-out.

Then came the eighth. J.J. Putz, who took the ball from Pedro Feliciano after Feliciano gave up a leadoff double followed by a ground out, yielded four straight hits that led to four earned runs. Very Heilmanesque.

7,512: Mets complete sweep of Pirates for 7 in a row

Sunday, May 10th, 2009
Lucky 7

The Mets scored eight runs to complete a sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates at Citi Field Sunday for an 8-4 win that extends their streak to seven games.

Mets starter Livan Hernandez surrendered a leadoff single to Nyjer Morgan to instantly scrap our chance for the first New York Mets no-hitter and advance our NoNoHitters.com county to 7,512 games. But despite giving the Pirates an early 2-0 lead, he settled in for a solid start, yielding two runs on seven hits and four walks over six innings. Hernandez struck out five.

Jose Reyes, Luis Castillo and Omir Santos all had multiple hit days, and Castillo and Carlos Beltran each drove in a pair of runs.

Morgan’s leadoff single off Hernandez marked the 926th time a potential Mets no-hitters was broken up by a leadoff hit, and the eighth time it has happened this year. (See our No-hitters killed by first at bat for stats on these.)

7,511: Mets’ 10-1 win makes it six in a row

Saturday, May 9th, 2009
A perfect 10

Strong pitching and a big inning proved to be a successful formula again as the New York Mets topped the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-1 during a Saturday afternoon game at Citi Field for the club’s sixth straight victory.

And with the Phillies’ loss to Atlanta Saturday, the Mets are now atop the National League East division by a half-game.

The Mets broke out with six singles in the bottom of the fourth inning to score five runs for a 6-0 lead. Jose Reyes went 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs and a run scored, and Carlos Beltran and Fernando Tatis each had two hits and an RBI. David Wright was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.

John Maine threw six innings of three-hit ball, giving up just one run while waking two and striking out three. The Pirates’ sole run came in the fifth inning when starting pitcher Paul Maholm led off the inning with a homer to deep right.

Maine lost his no-hitter in the first inning when Freddy Sanchez singled to left, making it 7,511 New York Mets games without a no-hitter.

7,510: Delgado’s blast, strong Niese start, make it 5 straight

Friday, May 8th, 2009
Nice rally

The Mets rallied for five runs in the eighth inning Friday night as New York extended its win streak to five games with a 7-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Starter Jonathon Niese, called up from AAA Buffalo to fill in for injured-and-or-benched Oliver Perez, gave his team a chance to win with six solid innings, giving up two runs on five hits while striking out five. He didn’t walk a single batter, but lost his no-hitter immediately when Nyjer Morgan led off the game with a line-drive infield to third to make it 7,510 New York Mets games without a no-no. (Yes, it’s another entry for our No-hitters killed by first at batpage)

Carlos Delgado capped a five RBI night with a three-run homer in the eighth that moved him past Mickey Mantle for 48th place on the career runs batted in list with 1,512 RBIs.

7,445: Mets’ streak ends with 5-2 loss to Pirates

Monday, August 18th, 2008

John Maine reached his pitch limit after five innings Monday afternoon, leaving his 2-0 lead in the hands of a bullpen that couldn’t close the door. The result was a 5-2 loss that moves the idle Phillies up to 1 1/2 games behind the first-place Mets.

Maine pitched five innings of two-hit ball and left with the shutout intact, but was pulled when his pitch count reached 96. A third-inning single he gave up to Freddy Sanchez moved our NoNoHitters.com count up to 7,445 Mets games without a no-hitter.

That left four innings for the Mets’ bullpen, and that didn’t work. Brian Stokes gave up three hits (one of them a two-run home run) in 1 1/3 innings of work.

Pedro Feliciano was charged with one earned run after giving up a one-out single in the eighth. He was followed by Duaner Sanchez who yielded two singles, a double and an intentional walk for two earned runs.

7,444: Santana’s three-hitter gives Mets sixth straight win

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

Johan Santana pitched a three-hit complete game shutout Sunday to lead the Mets to a 4-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates – the team’s sixth straight win.

The Pirates’ first hit off Santana came in the fourth inning when shortstop Jack Wilson singled to right center, making it 7,444 Mets games since 1962 with no no-hitters. But no worries for Santana, who gave up just two more hits, struck out seven and walked none en route to his 11th victory.

Brian Schneider went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and an RBI single and Carlos Beltran added a solo shot in the sixth.

The Mets look to complete a four-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday.

7,443: Strong Pedro outing, early scoring lead Mets to fifth straight win

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

The Mets again scored early and Pedro Martinez gave his teammates seven strong innings as the Mets won their fifth straight game, topping the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-4.

Jose Reyes had a homer and an RBI triple and Ramon Castro hit a two-run homer in the sixth.

Martinez gave up just one run, eight hits and one walk while striking out four. He lost his no-hitter in the first inning when Freddy Sanchez singled to left, making it 7,443 games without a no-hitter.

The Mets’ bullpen again struggled in the ninth. This time it was Eddie Kunz, who gave up two singles, one double, hit a batter and threw a wild pitch for three earned runs. Joe Smith came in to give up an single before Pedro Feliciano got the ball … and the save.
