7,641: K-Rod yields walk-off grand slam as Nats tip Mets 7-4

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009
Another collapse

Tim Redding took a no-hitter into the fourth inning, but Francisco Rodriguez gave up a ninth-inning bases-loaded walk and a walk-off grand slam as the Washington Nationals topped the New York Mets 7-4 on Wednesday.

Elijah Dukes’ single up the middle in the fourth bumped our NoNoHitters.com count up to 7,641 New York Mets games without a no-no. Just three more games and we can pause the count for another offseason.

The Mets jumped on the scoreboard in the second inning when Jeff Francoeur hit a deep fly ball that should have been ruled a home run but was declared a ground-rule double after a video replay. The ball clearly hit the top of the fence, fell lightly into the potted flowers just behind the fence and bounced back in, but the umpires failed to overturn the on-field call.

That left runners at second or third for Fernando Tatis, who hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Carlos Beltran. Francoeur, who advanced to third on Elijah Dukes’ throw home, then scored on an Omir Santos single to make it 2-0 Mets

The Nats got one back in the fifth on an Adrian Gonzalez sacrifice fly, but the Mets got it back in the sixth when Beltran drove in Pagan with a single.

Washington again pulled within one in the eighth on Ryan Zimmerman homer, but the Mets again answered back when Santos drove in his second run of the night with a base hit.

That set the stage for a K-Rod save, but it wasn’t to be.

7,615: Stokes wastes strong start by Redding, Mets fall 5-3

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009
Another wasted game

Pinch-hitter Jason Giambi’s eighth-inning two-RBI single Wednesday night helped lift the Colorado Rockies over the New York Mets 5-2 at Coors Field.

Giambi, recently recalled from AAA after the Rockies signed the former MVP to a minor league deal in August, ripped a first-pitch Brian Stokes fastball up the middle with the bases juiced (pun intended) to break a 2-2 tie and put the Rockies ahead for good.

Stokes’ subpar eighth-inning performance wasted a strong start by Tim Redding, who yielded just two runs on 7 hits and a walk over 6 2/3 innings while striking out a season high six batters.

The Mets again scored early, chaining together an Angel Pagan leadoff double, a Luis Castillo bunt single and a Daniel Murphy RBI sacrifice in the first for the game’s first run.

Redding lost his no-hitter on a Seth Smith homer in the bottom of the first, advancing our NoNoHitters.com count to 7,615 New York Mets games without a no-no. Troy Tulowitzki made it 2-1 Rockies in the third by singling home Smith, but Jeff Francoeur tied the game in the fourth with a bases-empty homer to left.

The Mets managed just five hits in the game.

7,573: Injury list grows as Mets lose 7-1

Sunday, July 19th, 2009
Stop the insanity

Mets starter Fernando Nieve was forced out of the game in the second inning Sunday as injuries continued to plague the team during a 7-1 loss in Atlanta.

Nieve left with a no-hitter still alive – only the 12th time in Mets franchise history that’s happened. We’ve chronicled it and the 11 others in this post.

Two batters into Tim Redding’s relief appearance, Yunel Escobar blasted a homer to kill the no-hitter and give the Braves their first run making it 7,573 games without a no-no. Redding pitched three innings, yielding five runs (two of them earned) on four hits and three walks.

7,560: Mets overcome Redding’s horrid start, blown K-Rod save for 9-8 win

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009
Big comeback

The Mets overcame a horrid start by Tim Redding and a blown save by Francisco Rodriguez to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-8 Thursday afternoon during a rain-soaked makeup game at PNC Park.

Redding put in just 2 1/3 innings, giving up five earned runs on six hits and a pair of walks. He lost his no-hitter right away (well, rain delays aside) when Andrew McCutchen led off with a double to right, advancing our NoNoHitters.com count to 7,560 New York Mets games without a no-no.

McCutchen’s double earns Redding his first entry on our No-hitters killed by first at bat page – the 20th time we’ve had to update it this season.

Jerry Manuel had seen enough in the third, and he took the ball from Redding in the third and gave it to Pat Misch. Misch retired the only two batters he faced to let the Mets’ offense start chipping away at the deficit.

Fernando Tatis, Ryan Church and Nick Evans hit back-to-back-to-back singles in the fourth, and Daniel Murphy followed with a pinch-hit two RBI single to put New York on the scoreboard.

The Mets got back to work in the fifth when Alex Cora led off with a double, David Wright advanced him to third with a single and Gary Sheffield drove him in with a single. Church scored Wright on a single, and Evans knocked in Tatis with a single to tie the game at five. Jermy Reed’s pinch-hit sacrifice fly scored Church and gave the Mets a 6-5 lead.

Tatis’ two-run homer in the sixth extended the Mets’ lead to 8-5.

Garrett Jones blasted a Pedro Feliciano fastball over the right-center field wall in the seventh, cutting the Mets’ lead to 8-6 and putting Jones just a single shy of the cycle.

The Mets needed just three outs for the win, but Francisco Rodriguez gave up a two-run homer to Adam Laroche to tie the game at 8. The Pirates nearly had a walk-off win in the ninth, but Luis Castillo snagged a hard-hit liner to end the inning.

But they clawed for a run in the top of the tenth when Tatis was hit by a pitch, stole second and then scored on a Church single. Rodriguez retired the tenth for the win, instead of the save.

7,555: Yanks one-hit Mets, suffering continues

Saturday, June 27th, 2009

The Yankees held the Mets to a single hit Saturday night, guaranteeing the 2009 Subway Series is property of the Bronx.

Alex Cora’s sixth inning single was the Mets’ only one, and it didn’t lead to anything.

Mets’ starter Tim Redding lost his no-hitter in the second inning when Ramiro Pena doubled to right, advancing our NoNoHitters.com count to 7,555 New York Mets games without a no-no.

Redding gave up five earned runs on six hits, including a 3rd inning solo homer by Nick Swisher and a 6th inning three-run homer by Jorge Posada.

7,550: Redding gets first win as a Met as N.Y. tops St. L. 6-4

Let’s Go Mets

Tim Redding threw seven innings to give the Mets’ bullpen some needed rest Monday night as New York topped the St. Louis Cardinals 6-4 at Citi Field.

Redding looked sharp and gave up four runs on five hits, but one of those was a two-run homer and another was a solo shot. He lost his no-hitter in the third inning when Khalil Greene led off with a single, advancing our NoNoHitters.com count to 7,550 New York Mets games without a no-no.

Alex Cora went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, and Daniel Murphy hit a solo home run in the fifth. Ryan Church, Omir Santos, and Luis Castillo also drove in Mets runs.

The Mets gained a half-game on the idle Phillies, moving to within 1 1/2 games of first in the N.L. East.

7,545: Homers hurt Mets in Baltimore

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009
Killed by the longball

Aubrey Huff hit a seventh-inning homer off reliever Pedro Feliciano Wednesday night to break a 4-4 tie and lead the Baltimore Orioles to a 6-4 win at Camden Yards.

Mets starter Tim Redding threw 5 2/3 innings, giving up four earned runs on seven hits and a pair of walks. He lost his no-hitter in the first inning when Nick Markakis singled to right, making it 7,545 New York Mets games without a no-no.

Matt Wieters tagged Redding in the second for his first Major League home run to give the Orioles a 3-1 lead. Huff’s homer came after the Mets rallied to tie the game on a Gary Sheffield home run and a bases-loaded walk to Alex Cora.

7,540: Mets lose in extra innings again as Ibanez homers off Takahashi

Thursday, June 11th, 2009
Extra innings not kind

Raul Ibanez blasted a 10th-inning three-run homer off Ken Takahashi as the Philadelphia Phillies topped the New York Mets 6-3 Thursday night at a foggy Citi Field.

The loss, the first-place Phils’ second come-from-behind victory in as many nights, puts the Mets four games back in the N.L. East as they head into a weekend series against the New York Yankees.

The Mets wasted a strong start from Tim Redding, who threw seven innings while giving up three runs on six hits and no walks. Redding gave up a third-inning single to Pedro Feliz to advance our NoNoHitters.com count to 7,540 New York Mets game without a no-hitter.

All three Mets runs were a Luis Castillo-Carlos Beltran production.

In the first, Castillo led off with a double and Beltran drove him home on a ground out. In the third, Castillo hit a one-out single and Beltran doubled him home. In the fifth, Castillo again led off the inning with a double, and Beltran knocked him in on a sacrifice fly.

7,535: Wright’s 10th inning double lifts Mets to 3-1 win

Friday, June 5th, 2009
The Wright stuff

David Wright drove in two runs with a tenth-inning double Friday night to lead the Mets to a 3-1 win over the Washington Nationals during a rainy night in the nation’s capital.

After Luis Castillo led off with the inning a single to right and Carlos Beltran drew a walk, Wright (4-for-5 on the night) lined a 2-2 pitch to the wall in right-center to score both.

Former National Tim Redding put in a stong start, giving up just one earned run on six hits and two walks while striking out two. He lost his no-hitter in the second inning when gave up a single up the middle to Austin Kearns to make it 7,535 New York Mets games without a no-no.

The Mets got on the scoreboard in a second inning marred by two bad calls by the umpire crew – one for the Mets, one against.

After Wright led off with a bloop double, Wright tagged up up on a Daniel Murphy fly-out to center. Elijah Dukes clearly threw him out, but Wright was called safe. Wright then scored on a Fernando Tatis ground-out that he clearly beat out, but was called safe.

The Nationals got their only run in the fifth after Josh Bard led off with a double and pinch-hitter Alberto Gonzalez blooped in an RBI single to tie the game at 1.

Francisco Rodriguez got his 15th save of the season with a perfect bottom of the tenth.

7,530: Redding tagged for seven runs in Mets loss

Saturday, May 30th, 2009
Thank you blackout

The Florida Marlins jumped on Mets starter Tim Redding early and often Saturday during a 7-3 win at Citi Field.

It was a rare instance in which the Fox Saturday afternoon Extra Innings blackout proved to be a blessing, not a curse.

Redding allowed seven earned runs on eight hits and two walks, giving up fifth-inning hits to Hanley Ramirez and Jorge Cantu before Jeremy Hermida belted three-run homer to end Redding’s horrid outing.

The former National lost his no-hitter in the first inning on a Emilio Bonifacio double, advancing our NoNoHitters.com count to 7,530 New York Mets games without a no-no.

One bright spot was Fernando Martinez, who had his best game as a Met since being called up by going 2-for-5 with an RBI.
