The Boston Americans’ Jesse Tannehill and the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Kevin Gross threw no-hitters on this date.

Tannehill on Wednesday, August 17, 1904, no-hit the Chicago White Sox for a 6-0 win at South Side Park. Tannehill walked one, hit a batter and struck out three to complete the third no-hitter in American League history.

Gross no-hit the San Francisco Giants on Monday, August 17, 1992, for a 2-0 win at Dodger Stadium. He retired 22 of the last 23 batters to complete the no-no.

Celebrating a no-no birthday today is Vern Bickford, who would have turned 95 today. Bickford on Friday, August 11, 1950, threw a no-hitter for the Boston Braves at Braves Field against the Brooklyn Dodgers. He died of cancer in 1960.
