For four-and-a-half seasons (2008-2012), this site dutifully logged the climbing count of New York Mets games without a no-hitter, which finally ended at 8,019 on June 1, 2012 when Johan Santana made history. During our tenure chronicling what was then baseball’s longest no-no drought from inception, we watched two of baseball’s newer franchises – the Colorado Rockies and the Tampa Bay Rays pass us on the baselines and exit the no-no club out of turn. But one team, the circa-1969 San Diego Padres, continued to build its streak into the 2021 season to surpass the Mets’ mark.

Having just watched my Cubs end their no no-hit streak, I was wondering when was the last time a LAST PLACE team threw a no hitter.
Great question. My master spreadsheet is not set up to track that as I don’t have the in-season records. Would be a good one for Elias.

I really like your new book on no-hitters and had fun checking out your website.
Ever since Nolan Ryan came to my home team the Angels in a trade from the Mets in 1972, I have been a fan of power pitching and in particular no-hitters and perfect games.
I have read just about everything on the subject and I found the way that you chose to present your book and the concept to be particularly fresh.
BTW, in addition to no-hitters being a passion of mine, I also have been a collector of no-hit tickets and game used no-hit memorabilia.
Currently I have tickets to 202 different official and unofficial no-hitters dating back to the early 1900’s. My collection also includes the signatures of all but 17 no-hit pitchers dating back to 1893.
Anyway, keep up the great work. I can’t wait until you write another book related to pitching.

Thanks, Scott! That collection sounds impressive. I have a few ticket stubs I’ve bought on eBay and about a dozen or so autographs from no-no pitchers. Every once in a while I go online and buy a few more, but haven’t found a place to display them all yet. Perhaps I’ll open a sports bar called No-nos someday!
If only the Mets had kept Nolan Ryan then Mets fans like myself wouldn’t have to wait until Santana deliver his No-No! How the Mets ever let a young World Series star in 1969 go for Jim Fregosi remains one of the most baffling transactions ever.

Great site! I’m also a great fan of no-hitters. Always hoping for that Padres no-no, unless it’s against the Cubs. I have an extensive collection of no-hitters and perfect games on DVD. I also have a couple of large excel spreadsheets filled with no-hitter info, rosters, etc, that constantly gets updated. I’ll keep checking your site. Great work!

According to the news last night, the Dodgers, who have pitched the most no-hitters in MLB history, have also been on the receiving end of the most no-hitters (19). Would you consider adding a list of the number of no-hitters each team has received? It’s fascinating!

Hi David. We do have that list on the website at https://www.nonohitters.com/no-hitters-vs-major-league-franchise/ and you can click on each team link to get the list of no-hitters against that franchise. The Dodgers are tied with the Phillies with 19, although other websites’ numbers might be slightly different as some NL teams differ on what year they consider their official franchise start dates. (For instance, we consider the Cleveland Blues’ Hugh Daily’s 1883 no-hitter against the Philadelphia Quakers as part of the Phillies’ count.

I see the Padres finally have a no-hitter with Joe Musgrove doing it yesterday. Two things I noted that were interesting. He had 84 career starts and never even had a complete game. Has that happened before and if so, did anyone ever have more than 84 starts without a complete game before throwing their no hitter?
Secondly, he was denied a “ perfect” game by hitting just one batsman. I usually see no- hitters being denied by an issued walk or a team error and am wondering if there have been many other no hitters that were not perfect games by a single hit batsman, no walks and no team errors. Thanks!
Hi Robert. On the HBP question, Hooks Wiltse tossed a 10-inning no-hitter for the Giants in 1908 with his only blemish being a hit batsman on the 27th batter. More than 100 years later, the same thing happened to Max Scherzer in a 9-inning no-hitter.
I’m not sure on the answer to your first question because I don’t have a column in my spreadsheet with number of starts and number of complete games, but it very well could be. If it was higher, it would likely be within the past decade as CGs become so rare.
Dirk, I am curious about No-Hitters by last place teams. After Tyler Gilbert last night pitched one, is there a way to find out how many no-no’s have been thrown by the team with the worst record in baseball at the time?

Good site, but I saw one mistake:
Under the Pittsburgh Pirates being no-hit by Lucas Giolito in 2020, it says that game occurred at Nationals Park in Washington instead of Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago.

Hey, great website! I’ve been passively collecting autographed baseball cards of no-hitters for about 20 years and now that my collection has grown to over 120 cards (some duplicates for guys who threw multiple), it’s starting to get hard to find some of the players I’m missing. Is there a forum or club of people doing this kind of collection where people can trade or offer advice/tips or share pics and stories of rare pulls, etc?

Love your site! Great stuff. I did find another spring training no-hitter. I was the PR director of the Devil Rays when we no-hit the Phillies at Jack Russell Stadium in 2003.
