Which is more rare, a pitcher throwing a no hitter or a batter hitting for the cycle (a single, double, triple and home run in one game)?

Turns out that throwing a no hitter is slightly rarer than hitting for cycle, at least since a Major League Baseball committee tightened its definition of a no hitter in 1991, knocking 50 of such feats off the record books. Major League players have had 330 hits for cycle over baseball’s history, and there have been 305 sanctioned no-hitters thrown.
Just three major league players (pictured above) have hit for the cycle three times — the Cincinnati Reds’ John Reilly, the New York Yankees’ Bob Meusel and Adrián Beltré, once for the Seattle Mariners and twice for the Texas Rangers. Only one player has hit for the cycle in the post-season — Brock Holt, for the Red Sox, in 2018. The San Diego Padres are the only Major League franchise to have no no-hitters, and until August 14, 2015, the team was also seeking its first hit-for-the-cycle. When Matt Kemp accomplished that rare feat, it left the Miami Marlins as the only team void of a cycle. (San Diego’s Wil Myers added a second in 2017.)

Seth Smith was a single short of the Padres 1st cycle last night … Our MLB Hits for the cycle page is here http://t.co/67zxiw48QW
Although “Hitting For The Cycle” is a bit more frequent than the “No-Hitter”, hitting for the “Natural” cycle is rarer than the “Perfect Game”. It’s only been done 13 times.
Matt Kemp hit the first Padres cycle last night
Yep, updating the site now. Thanks!
Thanks for this cycle list! A recent discussion came up about the “order” of the cycle hits and this list made finding the games on Baseball-Reference *so much easier.*
Just one FYI, however. Beltre’s 3rd cycle(!) was apparently on the 3rd of August, not 4th, per B-R and an article I found on MLB.com (“Monday night”).
http://m.mlb.com/news/article/140986632/adrian-beltre-hits-for-cycle-for-third-time/
Thanks again for the great info and I look forward to reading many of the other interesting baseball posts here.
Thanks on that. Just updated the date (and got caught up on the cycles by Arenado and Bellinger).
One more. Check Brock Holt’s game date. B-R shows June 16. I reviewed cycle games from #315 to 295 and those were the only two where the dates seemed to be off.
Wish you listed opponents for ALL games. You could also add if it’s not his 1st cycle.
