If the New York Mets’ P.J. Conlon can throw a no-hitter in his MLB debut tonight at Great American Ball Park (no pressure), he’d become the third Ireland-born hurler – and the first in 135 years – to toss a major-league no-no.
Happy 32nd birthday to Homer Bailey, the Cincinnati Reds hurler who tossed no-hitters in 2012 and 2013.
Today is the 101st anniversary of baseball’s only double nine-inning no-hitter. The Chicago Cubs’ Hippo Vaughn and the Cincinnati Reds’ Fred Toney each held their opponents hitless through nine innings of baseball at Weeghman Park on Wednesday, May 2, 1917.
Nolan Ryan threw his major league record seventh no-hitter, 27 years ago today. Ryan, pitching for the Texas Rangers at the age of 44 on May 1, 1991, struck out 16 Blue Jays and held the others to no hits as the Rangers topped Toronto 3-0.
Five no-hitters have been thrown on this date (April 30), but only four of the pitchers (Charlie Robertson, James “Tex” Carleton, Bob Feller and Jim Maloney) also earned a victory.
Happy birthday to Cincinnati Reds pitcher Frank “Noodles” Hahn, thrower of a 1900 no-no.
