The Chicago White Sox have thrown 20 no-hitters during the franchise’s American League history beginning in 1901.
During its first few seasons, the ball club went by the name Chicago White Stockings, a nickname first used by the National League’s Cubs. The American League club eventually adopted the shortened White Sox moniker used by local newspapers.
Jimmy “Nixey” Callahan threw the team’s first no-no, and that Sept. 20, 1902, 3-0 blanking of the Detroit Tigers is also the American League’s inaugural no-hitter. That honor had originally gone to the Cleveland Blues’ Earl Moore, who tossed nine innings of no-hit ball a year earlier against the White Stockings but gave up leadoff single in 10th and one more hit in a losing effort. Baseball’s 1991 ruling knocked Moore’s effort off the record books.
Frank Smith and Mark Buehrle each threw two no-hitters for the Sox, an White Sox pitchers have tossed three perfect games, putting the franchise second in the majors just shy of the New York Yankees (4).
